Looks like the cold winter weather will continue through the weekend. Since we are not sure what the winter weather is going to bring in the next few days, please call the park or museum to confirm that programs are still on. Click on the venue below the event to get contact information.

The WinterFest Ice Rink in Raleigh will be open through January 31st.

Museums and More

The Museum of Life and Science is still Frozen Over. Come weave through an icicle forest, build an icy shelter, and skate on a synthetic ice rink in your socks - all indoors.

The Mill as Muse Art and Photography Contest is coming up. Get your paintbrushes and cameras ready and try to capture the best images of Yates Mill and the surrounding park, then plan to enter this year's contest. Both the youth and adult entries are due by February 1st.

 

UNCMLK2016 continues through Sunday with a presentation, Whose Shoes am I walking in? Thursday and Dar He: The Story of Emmett Till on Sunday. Both events are free and open to the public.

Monsters Inc. will be the featured family flick Saturday morning at the Holly Springs Cultural Center. Bring the kids Monday morning for the movie Little Rascals.

Extreme Mammals: Raleigh Edition will be at the Museum of Natural Sciences through March. The special exhibit explores the diversity of mammals, examining the ancestry and evolution of the biggest, smallest, and most amazing mammals that have walked the Earth.

Visit the Hunt Fitness Center's Open HouseSaturday to check out free class demos and tours of the fitness gallery. They will even be giving out a free monthly membership!

Along with Meet Your Museum Tours andWeekend Family Friendly Tours of the North Carolina Museum of Art every weekend, this Saturday the Museum is hosting a Future of Learning Panel Discussion for PreK-16 educators of all subjects, principals, administrators, and anyone interested in the future of learning.

The Fun Starts Early

Thursday night's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will feature a celebration of some of the smallest Extreme Mammals: Tiny Giants and Singing Mice. There is an admission fee for the lecture.

This Thursday brings another monthly installment of Family Nature Night to the Sertoma Arts Center. This month they will have fun Digging for Fossils and learning how paleontologists sort through their finds.

This month's Discovery Series at the Holly Springs Cultural Center presents Jonathan Daniels - Wire Boy: A Tale of Why Art MattersFriday evening.

Art in the Evening will kick off the weekend at the North Carolina Museum of Art Friday night with extended hours, special drinks & small plates and live music by Sidecar Social Club. TheFriday Night Sound Bite will explore a Perfect Childhood. End the evening with a screening of the 1934 film, The Gay Divorcee.

Celebrate Winter at a Park

They will enjoy a relaxing morning outing looking for Friday Morning Birds at Eno River State Park.

Join Rangers at Durant Nature Park after dark Friday as they take an evening walk in the woods to look and listen for winter Predators on the Prowl.

Explore the pyrophyllite quarry at Occoneechee Mountain with a real geologist on Saturday afternoon's Geology Hike.

A New photo gallery donated by Ellen Tinsley aka doc Ellen, will showcase Jordan Lake's Bald Eagles. Doc Ellen is a retired veterinarian who has turned to nature photography as a new past time. She will be on hand Saturday afternoon so you can Meet the Photographer.

Ever wonder how much of the earth's water is available for human and animal use? Come join a Ranger for an eye opening program and see if you can Spare A Drop? Saturday at Falls Lake.

You can become a Citizen Scientist at Prairie Ridge Ecostation for Wildlife Learning every Saturday morning or join them with your little ones every Thursday for Nature Stories.

Oh Deer! is the topic of this Saturday's Family Wildlife Series Program at Blue Jay Point County Park. Come and learn about deer ecology and their amazing ability to adapt to a changing North Carolina.

Come on out to the lake Saturday and see whatWinter Waterfowl are making Jordan Lake their home. Come back Sunday to the Bald Eagle Observation Deck and learn about the bald eagles of Jordan Lake.

Take a Full Moon Hike after dark Saturday at West Point on the Eno. This Sunday's Winter Hike will explore Penny's Bend Nature Preserve and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail along the Eno History Hike.

If your up early Sunday, join them at Harris Lake Park for a Winter Bird Hike. They will take a Full Moon Night Hike Monday evening after dark. Harris Lake is also hosting a Bark and Buds Workshop Wednesday afternoon about how to identify winter trees without their leaves.

The Kids Exchange Consignment Sale is back this weekend to the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. Come get great deals on like new clothes, toys and other children's items.

Saturday is the DogGoneFast Flyball Tournamentat the Holshouser Building. Flyball is a fast-paced family-oriented dog sport that has become a hit on Animal Planet and ESPN's Great Outdoor Games.

The Indoor Hunter/Jumper Show will run all weekend at the Hunt Horse Complex at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. The show gives any horse lover a front row seat to the action.
