Along with some fun concerts and movies, this is a great kid weekend. Whether you have a kindergartner heading off to school for the first time or some kids suffering from cabin fever after staying out of the heat for a few days, there are some super activities for you and your kids this weekend!
Second Saturday is back at the State Historic Sites. Duke Homestead State Historical Park is holding a Summer Children's Festival. This event will showcase both art and crafts people under the age of 21 and vendors who create and sell items for children. Music, stories, and hands-on activities will make for a delightful day.
In Downtown Raleigh, the State Capitol will feature traditional music and diverse music of the state for a Music and Dance Concert. The day will include cloggers, an african storyteller and traditional and popular music of mid-19th century America.
Also in Downtown Raleigh, the North Carolina Museum of History will focus on Wonderful Wood. Watch craftspeople make bowls and other objects from that "tree-mendous" renewable resource, wood. You can make your own wood craft to take home in a Make it, Take it event.
Authors of North Carolina will be highlighted at Bennett Place Historic Site. A collection of authors from across North Carolina will share their work with audiences on the grounds of the Bennett Farm.The popular Civil War band, Carolina Fife and Drum, will perform music of the 19th century and provide talks on the history of the music of the Civil War era.
Bentonville State Historic Site will host a Community Picnic and Social Dance highlighting the art of Victorian dance and the community support that was so important for people during this turbulent time.
Celebrations & Family Festivals
Come to Hillsborough on Saturday for Family Fun Day. There will be a scavenger hunt around town that will include stops at the Orange County Historical Museum, the Burwell School Historic Site, and other shops and businesses around town.
Fire Departments from around the state will attend North Carolina's Main Street Fire Truck Parade. Units will include modern and antique apparatus, pipe and drum bands and fire department honor guards. After the parade, all the equipment will be available to check out and for picture opportunities.
The Museum of Life and Science will be celebrating Engineers Day. Meet Triangle area engineers responsible for several of the Museum exhibits and other cool technologies. Come participate in hands-on demonstrations and activities that are fun and educational for people of all ages
For the sixth year in a row, the Ritmo Latino Music, Art & Dance Festival will bring authentic Latino culture to Cary's Fred G. Bond Metro Park. The fun starts with a free soccer clinic hosted by Carolina Railhawks players and staff and finishes up with a Latin American festival complete with music, dancing, crafts and food.
Come on out to Bass Lake Park for a little friendly competition, playing your favorite bingo games for Bass Lake Family Bingo.
Concerts & Cuture in the Triangle
2nd Friday Artwalk is back in Downtown Carrboro with free trolley service around a three-mile loop that incorporates twenty-five local businesses. Come on out to enjoy live music and other art related entertainment.
The music starts early in Garner Thursday night for Music on the Main. This week's concert features Spare Change.
Cuervo, a Latin rock band will be at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center for a Starlight Concert.
Downtown Wake Forest will come alive with food, merchants and music during Art After Hours. Shops, restaurants and galleries are open late with art exhibits and receptions along with free horse and carriage rides
Oak City Art Market at the Raleigh City Museum highlights the city's top local artists in the historic Briggs Building. Shop for fun merchandise and visit with artists doing what they love.
Traditional drumming in Japan can be traced back to ancient times. Come on out to Fletcher Park Sunday night to travel back to ancient Japan with a concert by Triangle Taiko.
Come join Mike Raley and Anne Clapp of 680 WPTF The Weekend Gardener Show Live. There will be Prizes, free samples and gardening tips at the NC State Fairgrounds.
Movies at the Parks & Museums
The Holly Springs Cultural Center is excited to offer a screening of Holes Thursday night for the whole family to enjoy. Copies of the book will be available in the library next door while supplies last. Saturday morning's family movie showing will feature Lilo and Stitch.
The North Carolina Museum of Art will be bringing the 2009 film Bright Star to the big screen this Friday. Saturday night, the Art Museum boasts the Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Thursday night you can sneak out to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area after dark for a Skywatching Session.
Friday night, you can kick off your weekend with a Canoe Tour of Big Lake at William B. Umstead State Park.
Have some summer fun by creating a one of a kind boat using paints and the sail of your choice at Harris Lake County Park for Make a Boat and Watch it Float. Sunday at Harris Lake, you can Soar Like an Eagle. Learn where eagles can be found in the park and try your hand at spotting them as you take a hike.
