For those of you heading back to college or traditional calendar school, your summer may be winding down. With plenty of fun activities throughout the Triangle, you can give the summer a grand farewell!

Even though the winter holidays seem pretty far off, advanced tickets for Pullen Park's Holiday Express are already on sale through Reclink. For the first two weeks in December, Pullen Park will be festively decorated with thousands of lights and transformed into a holiday wonderland. The tickets sell out so get yours now before they are gone.
 
Science Thursday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will explore the Sharks Inside the Inlets: Habitat Use by coastal Sharks in North Carolina Estuaries.
 
Also in Downtown Raleigh Thursday night, Donna Hughes and Big Fat Gap will be playing a Pickin' in the Plaza concert.
 
Music Makers All Star Revue featuring, Eddie Tigner, Peewee Hayes, Albert White, Nashid Abdul, and Ardie Dean will be playing at Thursday evening's Back Porch Music on the Lawn Concert at the American Tobacco Campus Amphitheater.
 
I would like to offer an apology. I mistakenly published that last week's National Night Out event in Holly Springs was at Womble Park. It actually was at Jones Park. I am truly sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Festivals & Special Events

Grab your family for a friendly competition in the Sport of Science for Saturday's Family Science Olympiad at Marbles Kids Museum. Bring your brain power and take on a series of interactive and hands-on challenges like building a rocket, flying paper airplanes, and constructing a catapult.
 
Bring your kids to watch North Carolina's Main Street Fire Parade Saturday in Downtown Raleigh. There will be both modern and antique apparatus marching.
 
Come out for a good time and try your luck entering the Catfish Tournament Saturday morning at Bass Lake Park. There are categories and prizes in both youth and adult categories. Bass Lake will host Family Bingo Friday night,
 
The Annual Children's Good News Spectacular returns to the North Carolina State Fairgrounds this weekend. Kids will be treated to inflatible games and rides, popcorn, snow cones, drinks, and an illusion show blended with several gospel presentations.
 
Also at the Fairgrounds this weekend will be a Double L Bar Mounted Shooters and the Children's Clothing and Baby Equipment Sale.
 
The WPTF Weekend Gardener Show with Mike Raley and Anne Clapp will be broadcasting live from the Raleigh State Farmers Market Saturday morning.
 
On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays or every month, Halle Cultural Arts Center invites you to join them for a Super Fun Saturday. Stop by and sample activities for the upcoming art camps, drop by to do arts and crafts, play games and more during this free morning event.
 
Come together to laugh, play and enjoy fun and games for another Third Sunday Children's Carnival in front of Raleigh Times Bar Sunday afternoon.

History Comes Alive

Join the North Carolina Museum of History Friday for Conservation Assistance Day. You are invited to bring up to three objects for assessment and advice on care from their conservators. Make sure to make an appointment in advance.
 
Join Historic Preservation Society of Durham docents Saturday morning on a Civil Rights Heritage Walking Tour focusing on sites in downtown Durham that were important in the 1950s and '60s Civil Rights movement.
 
Relive history and experience the traditional way corn was ground into meal and wheat into flour, using water power, simple machines & millstones. The Historic Yates Mill Corn Grinding Tours are a great opportunity to see the complex mill in operation. Also at Yates Mill Saturday you can come learn about the Historic Trade of Candy Making.
 
Kids ages 6 and up are invited to join Yates Mil for a day of Messing About with Boats on Monday.
 
The Fall Lecture Series at Mordecai Historic Park kicks off Sunday afternoon with Dr. Douglas R. Porter speaking on Slavery and Emancipation on the Mordecai Plantation.

Movies & Concerts at the Parks and Museums

Friday night's Art in the Evening at the North Carolina Museum of Art will feature the band Tea Cup Gin and an in-depth exploration of Stand Up Straight. Friday night's movie will be the 2014 film, Whiplash. Come back after dark Saturday for the cult favorite The Big Lebowski along with Costumes, Creedence, the new Bowling Wii Game Truck and White Russians.
 
Fridays on the Front Porch of the Carolina Inn brings Mel Melton & The Wicked Mojos to the stage along with the food trucks Bam Pow Chow and Chirba Chirba Dumpling.
 
Head to Downtown Carrboro Friday night for the monthly 2nd Friday Artwalkwalk to enjoy the galleries, live music and art related entertainment.
 
The second Friday of the month brings Art After Dark back to Downtown Fuquay-Varina.
 
Second Friday also brings Art After Hours to Downtown Wake Forest. Come see the town come alive with food, merchants and music!
 
Clay Street After Work in Mebane Friday night will feature the family friendly group Big Bang Boom playing children's music that rocks.
 
Traditional Dance Caller, Connie Carringer will teach fun dances for the whole family Friday night at Halle Cultural Arts Center's Family Dance.
 
Friday night's Starring North Carolina! Film Series at the North Carolina Museum of History will feature the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans which was shot near the Pisgah National Forest and around Hickory.
 
GB4 brings their Classic Rock Party Band sounds to the outdoor stage at the Holly Spring s Cultural Center Friday night.
 
They are hosting Science at Sunset at the Museum of Life and Science Friday night. Enjoy live music (the amazing & wonderful Bulltown Strutters), food trucks, cold treats and a beer tent for the adults while you explore at the back exhibits at the Museum after hours.
 
Movies By Moonlight brings Brave to the big screen at Regency Park Saturday night.
 
Surf's Up will be the Family Movie Saturday morning at the Holly Springs Cultural Center. Mr. Popper"s Penguins will be the Monday Morning Movie.
 
William B. Umstead State Park will be showing the movie Amphibians to the big screen Saturday morning.
 
The Moonlighters Orchestra, not your typical Big Band will be playing this week's Sunday in the Park Concert Series at Fred Fletcher Park.
 
The Halle Cultural Arts Center will treat kids to a week of Free Kids Movies. They will feature Robin Hood, Cars, The Smurfs, Epic and Treasure Planet.

At the Parks

Spend the night camping at Harris Lake County Park Friday to Saturday on a Family Campout! Learn how to set up a campsite, build a fire, cook dinner and then explore the park at night.
 
Come to Lake Crabtree County Park after dark on Friday for a Sunset Canoe Trip. Come back Saturday for a Treasure Hunt! Learn basic orienteering skills and then use those skills to work with the other mateys on your team to see if you can locate the treasure!
 
Educators are invited to attend the NC Aquatic WILD Workshop Saturday at Blue Jay County Park which includes the free Aquatic WILD K-12 educator guide and a 6-hour workshop which counts as a Criteria I workshop in the NC Environmental Education Certification Program.
 
Life Under a Log will be the Family Feature program Saturday at Crowder District County Park.
 
They will be exploring How Butterflies Are Like Chickens at William B. Umstead State Park Saturday.
 
Hike a mile with a ranger to discover the wildlife and landscape of the Eno River Wednesday morning before the day heats up.
