February 13th - February 19th 2014 Triangle
by Pam & Michael Davison
Happy Valentines Day! Have a wonderful day with your special people on Friday. This would have been a jam packed weekend full of festivals, history, art and birdwatching, but as I am writing this, the Triangle is shutting down. Depending on how the weather goes, events and activities may or may not take place this weekend. This newsletter will let you know what was scheduled, but please call and confirm or check the park or museum's website to make sure they are open and events are still happening. Stay warm & safe.
Saturday is Darwin Day at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The annual event celebrates Charles Darwin, his theory of natural selection and his impact on modern scientific research today. Come enjoy lots of great hands on science with area researchers and universities.
Friday through Monday is the Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. See below for all the details, but there are lots of fun opportunities to contribute to the count and learn all about our local feathered friends.
Art, Music & History
The Apex High School Strings Ensemble will hold a Concert and Fundraiser at the Halle Cultural Arts Center Friday night. They are also still accepting kids artwork for next weekend's Youth Art Show. The Lorax will be their Tuesday Morning Movie.
Friday night at the NC Museum of Art makes a great date night with Friday Night Sound Bites that focus on images and symbols of love that have stood the test of time. Ed Stephenson and the Paco Band will provide live music for Art in the Evening and the 1936 classic Desire starring Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper will be this week's NCMA Cinema feature.
Come celebrate Black History Month aboard the Raleigh Trolley on Saturday. This special event will take participants through Downtown Raleigh on a historic trolley tour highlighting the city's African American heritage.
The North Carolina Museum of History is also celebrating Black History Month Saturday with Hands on History, a drop in opportunity to learn about African Americans who have called North Carolina home while you make a craft, jump a rope or hear a story. Storytellers to Go will also be at the Museum Saturday to present The Golden Doorstop. I saw the play a few weeks ago at the Halle Cultural Art Center and the kids do a great job presenting the story of the Conrad Reed.
Created Equal: The Loving Story, the 2012 documentary featuring Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple whose suit against Virginia's 1924 Racial Integrity Act ended with the 1967 Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, will be shown Sunday at the North Carolina Museum of History followed by a panel discussion.
Sunday is the Annual Cary African-American Celebration at the Cary Arts Center. This year's celebration includes a tribute to Nelson Mandela and will feature a distinguished panel discussing the struggle for civil rights in America and its influence on South Africa's anti-apartheid movement.
Local Authors Dr. Victoria Reynolds and Dr. Ann Deagon will hold an Author Reading at the Burwell School Historic Site Wednesday evening.
The State Fairgrounds
Bring your Valentine to the State Fairgrounds this weekend. Starting Thursday and running all weekend, the NC International Auto Expo will highlight new production models and concept cars with car, truck and sports utility vehicle manufacturers on display.
Over 100 vendors featuring Lionel, K-Line, MTH, American Flyer, "N", "HO", "O", "S". and "G" gauge trains, accessories, track, switches and hard to find parts will be on display Sunday for the Toy Train Sale and Swap Meet.
The Great Backyard Bird Count
This weekend celebrates the Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. A national four day event that encourages bird watchers to count birds and report their results online to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Bird Count is a featured event at several parks around the Triangle. Some of the events do require registration so click through for all the details.
Harris Lake County Park starts off the weekend with Valentine's for the Birds and Intro to Bird Watching for kids on Friday afternoon, Birdapalooza and a Night Hike with the Birds on Saturday, a Morning Bird Walk on Sunday, the Wonders of Woodpeckers and Build Your Own Bluebird House on Monday.
Lake Crabtree County Park is hosting Bird Count Walks each morning Friday through Monday, a Bird Expo both Saturday and Sunday, and the Migration Headache and Junior Birder Patch Program on Monday.
Meet up with other birders Saturday for an Early Morning Walk along the American Tobacco Trail. Listen for bird calls, and exchange notes with other "birders".
Gather at Kids Together Playground at Marla Dorrel Park to Count the Birds Saturday as you identify birds by species and record the number of each that you see. Then enjoy refreshments as they tally the results.
Durant Nature Park will hold a Birding Bonanza on Sunday afternoon that will include an opportunity to become a citizen scientist counting birds in our area, guided bird hikes and family friendly activities like bird feeder making, homemade field guides, bird games and bird crafts!
Little River Regional Park invites you to come to the park to build a Bird Box.
White Deer Park also invites you to swing by their Nature Center to pick up your checklist and learn how the Great Backyard Bird Count works.
Bird Olympics is the theme of Monday morning's Family Wildlife Series program at Blue Jay County Park.
