Civil War Weekend

Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens
Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens. Saturday Sunday, September 23rd-24th. 10am-5pm Admission to Civil War Weekend activities at the New Bern Academy Museum and Tryon Palace grounds are free.

The sights and sounds of the Civil War will come to life during Tryon Palace Civil War Weekend on the grounds of the historic New Bern Academy. Tryon Palace is proud to introduce the 35th Regiment of the United States Colored Troops, our state’s first regiment of African American Union soldiers. Visitors will also meet and interact with Civil War reenactors from Company F, 7th NC regiment of the Confederate States Army.

Visitors can watch regiment drills, learn about Civil War-era medical tools, and explore the war’s impact on free and enslaved people living in eastern North Carolina. Also, discover New Bern’s Civil War history through exhibits inside the New Bern Academy Museum, which will open to the public from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s events will culminate with a canon firing on the South Lawn of the Governor’s Palace at approximately 7:30 p.m.

For even more Civil War history, visitors can travel to the New Bern Battlefield Park, which is the site of the 1862 Battle of New Bern.
