Martin Luther King Jr. Day March

Alexander Dickson House
Downtown Hillsborough Monday, January 15th 9am Free

Traffic will be rerouted around downtown Hillsborough the morning of Monday, Jan. 15 to allow for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative March.

The march will begin at 9 a.m. and is expected to last about an hour. Marchers will travel north on Churton Street from the Historic Orange County Courthouse at the corner of South Churton and East King streets. They will stop briefly for prayer at Dickerson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church at the corner of North Churton and East Queen streets. Marchers then will continue north on North Churton Street to West Union Street, where they will proceed west to Mt. Bright Baptist Church, 211 W. Union St. A service will be held there at 10 a.m.

The Hillsborough Police Department will close Churton Street between Margaret Lane and Union Street shortly before 9 a.m. with northbound Churton Street traffic being directed east and west on Margaret Lane. Police will then conduct a rolling roadblock, opening each intersection after marchers have passed. Officers will close West Union Street between North Churton Street and Mt. Bright Baptist Church as marchers approach and reopen intersections as they pass.

Police urge motorists to avoid Churton Street between Union and King streets if possible and to use alternate routes around the downtown area.

Free parking is available in the Eno River Parking Deck, on King Street and in various lots, including two lots off King Street. A map of public parking options in downtown Hillsborough is available on the town’s website.
