Carrie Knowles will present her book Apricots in a Turkish Garden, a collection of ten short stories. Carrie is the 2014 Piedmont Laureate in Short Fiction. She has been a freelance writer for the past forty-five years. She has published widely in both fiction and non-fiction and has won a number of prestigious writing awards including: Midland Authors Poetry Award, the American Heart Association Heart and Torch Award for Creative Journalism, and Glimmer Train’s Very-Short Fiction Contest. Carrie was born in Detroit. She and her husband, Jeff Leiter, moved to Raleigh in 1978. They have three children. Her non-fiction book, The Last Childhood: A Family Story of Alzheimer’s, Three Rivers Press 2000, has been noted as one of the top 100 books written about Alzheimer’s. It is being reissued in a third edition by Second Wind Publishing September 2015. She has two novels published by Roundfire Books: Lillian’s Garden and Ashoan’s Rug, and a collection of short stories, Apricots in a Turkish Garden published by Second Wind Press, 2015. Lillian’s Garden was selected a summer “must read” by the North Carolina Arts Council/NC Culture Blogger. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
