Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC)

American Tobacco Trail (Greenways, Trails)
American Tobacco Trail - New Hill Parking Area February 15th-18th Friday-Monday Free for all ages. Pre-registration is required.

Participate in the 22nd Annual Great Backyard Bird Count! Bird watchers of all ages are encouraged to count birds to create a real-time snapshot of where birds are across the globe. View more information here.
Registration is required for all GBBC participants through our online system. Dress for the weather and bring water, binoculars and bird ID book if you have them or borrow ours.

GBBC Bird Walk Along the American Tobacco Trail
Friday, Feb. 15

For ages 6 and up

As part of our Great Backyard Bird Count Programs, we will observe and count the variety of birds that can be found along the Trail as we walk to the Beaver Creek Bridge.
Meet near the restrooms at the New Hill parking area (1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Road, Apex).
 
 
 
Geocaching 101 at the American Tobacco Trail
Friday, March 8
3–4:30 p.m.
For ages 6 and up
Free
Experience the fun of geocaching along the American Tobacco Trail. Learn the basics of this high-tech treasure hunt then search for "caches" along the Trail. We will provide GPS units and instruction on how to use them, but feel free to bring your own unit or smartphone with a geocache app. Bring a water bottle and dress for the weather. Register early as space is limited.
Meet at the picnic tables at the White Oak parking area (1305 White Oak Church Road, Apex). This is a family program – all participants must be registered in advance.
 
 
Salamanders on the American Tobacco Trail
Sunday, March 10

Free
Salamanders are the most secretive of all amphibians, and this just makes them all the more fascinating! Join us as we learn about their interesting life cycle, see some up close, then head out to search the vernal pools along the Trail for eggs & larvae.
Meet at the lower picnic tables at the New Hill parking area (1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Road, Apex). This is a family program – all participants must be registered in advance.
 
 
 
Sensory Hike on the American Tobacco Trail

Use your senses to discover more about nature on an interactive hike along the Trail. Join us to see, touch, smell, hear and even taste the outdoors!
