The big activity this weekend is the NC State Fair. You have until next Sunday to take it all in. We have ticket information and special days so click through before you go.
Halloween is Around the Corner!
With only a few weeks until Halloween, there are plenty of spooky activities to get your little ghouls and goblins in the mood. With fun seasonal activities for little ones, family centered events and truly spooky haunted houses for the older crowd, there is most certainly something for everyone these next few weeks. Many of the following events do have admission fees or require reservations so click through for all the details. There will be even more Halloween activities next weekend, so if you are trying to plan ahead, just go to the "Events" search at www.ParkGeek. com, put in the dates and start planning!
Along with bats and black cats, wolves are another great Halloween animal. Head over to the NC Zoo for HOWL-O-Ween to learn the howls and tales of the Red Wolves.
A little outside the Triangle, the Natural Science Center of Greensboro is hosting Pumpkin Palooza this Saturday. The museum is a great day trip with lots of hands on exhibits and a great collection of live animals.
Fridays and Saturdays from now to Halloween, the Battleship North Carolina dares you to tour the Ghost Ship, North Carolina's only haunted battleship! The hatches will crack open with all new unique designs and scares.
Fall Color is Here
While October is a sensational time of year to just get in the car head over to a state or county park and go for a hike, there are some great guided hikes and special programs going on at the parks to make your Fall weekend that much more enjoyable!
Explore the forest at night, listening for animals and enjoying the beauty of the woods on a Night Hike of West point on the Eno Friday night.
What's Fall without a campfire? Head on over to Whippoorwill Park Friday night to enjoy a Community Campfire complete with s'mores.
Join Bird Enthusiasts Paula Page and Ellen Tinsley Saturday afternoon at Historic Yates Mill County Park for a presentation as they showcase the species of birds that can be seen in Wake County and in North Carolina. Yates Mill will also be conducting Corn Grinding Tours this weekend.
Kids are invited to Lake Michie for a Fishin' Frenzy. Everything is provided so its a great way to introduce kids to fishing. Come back after dark for a truly adventurous experience as they combine all the fun of a night time paddle with the use of GPS systems and the hunt for geocaches filled with clues and prizes on a Moonlight Geo Paddle.
The Light The Night Walk is an annual fundraising event at Bicentennial Plaza for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Hemophilia Walk at Lake Crabtree County Park is the National Hemophilia Foundation's largest fundraising event.
Assist Hemlock Bluffs staff with trail maintenance and improvements to aid in recreation and conservation efforts during a Volunteer Workday on Sunday.
Take a leisurely 1-mile walk Tuesday morning with a Prairie Ridge Ecostation naturalist to explore the changing seasons in the prairie, pond and lowland arboretum on a Walk Through the Seasons. Wednesday, come back out and learn how to help scientists study birds with Project FeederWatch.
Poetry, Music & Movies
Carrboro will host the West End Poetry Festival this weekend with something for the whole family including a youth poetry workshop.
Kick off the weekend at the Mordecai Historic Park for a Music on the Porch concert with the band, The Johnny Folsom 4.
The Annual Hillsborough Handmade Parade is a walking theatrical performance, a spectacle of art, creativity, and public theatre. The Handmade Parade is a Mardi Gras style parade with giant puppets, stilt-walkers, Brazilian Samba and Marching Bands that will parade through historic downtown Hillsborough.
Come on out to Bass Lake Park Friday night for some Family Bingo.
Take an insider's look at the Pullen Art Center during the Fall Arts Fair. Enjoy demonstrations, try out class samplers, and take tours of the studios.
Events at the Museums
The Museum of Life and Science gears up for a week of special activities honoring Wolf Awareness Week.
UNC at Chapel Hill is offering a new series of free tours for the public. Tours in the Priceless Gem Series, will be given most Fridays through the Fall semester. University experts are leading the walking tours on various topics from archeology to architecture to today's sustainability issues.
The NC Museum of Natural Sciences is partnering with the NC Section of the American Chemical Society for Chemistry Day! Topics will include "Polymers, the Stuff of Life," "Electrochemistry of the Brain," "Metals in Biology" and much more!
Visit the Raleigh City Museum to learn more how people mourned the loss of loved ones in the 19th century. Mourning in the 19th Century will cover funeral customs, superstitions, and that lost art of mourning.
As Edenton Street United Methodist Church celebrates its 200th anniversary, Raleigh's eight historic downtown churches have come together to celebrate with a Community Historic Church Walk. Church doors will open to visitors to meander at their own pace and then stroll down the sidewalk to one of the other seven churches on the Walk.
Historic Preservation Society of Durham docents invite you to join them for a Civil Rights Legacy Walking Tour focusing on sites in downtown Durham that were important in the 1950s and "60s Civil Rights movement.
Tuesday night brings Target $2 Tuesday Night. The monthly event lets you enjoy extended hours for just $2 per person.
