Enjoy all the wonderful festivals, concerts and arts & crafts that Fall brings.

Let me take this chance to welcome all of our new ParkGeeks who we met last weekend at the Heritage Festival at Historic Oak View Park. I hope this newsletter will make your weekend planning easy and exciting!
 
The Fun Starts Early
 

Its Hockey Season! Think Ice is an all day event Thursday presented by the Carolina Hurricanes down at Raleigh's City Plaza to create a buzz around the start of the season. There will be a large block of ice with 100 small Hurricanes "coins" frozen inside. Fans will be able to shoot a hockey puck at the block of ice. Prizes will be awarded for hitting the block of ice with the puck, and fans who are able to get a coin out of the ice after taking a shot will be entered to win that day's grand prize.

Thursday at the NC State Farmers Market, the Great Pumpkin Contest will feature a kids decorated pumpkin contest, the largest pumpkin contest and free pumpkin recipes along with the amazing collection of pumpkins, fall squash and mums that local farmers have to offer.
Thursday night, head over to City Market and enjoy a Music on the Market Concert featuring the band Effigy. Come back to City Market Friday night for a concert by Andrew Marlin & John Hill and an evening of autumn folk music.
First Friday in downtown Raleigh features extended hours at Marbles Kids Museum and the Raleigh City Museum along with a Gallery Walk. Marbles is even offering Family Glee & Savings Spree with special family pricing and a Thriller workshop with the NC Theater.
Along with extended hours, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences First Friday night treats visitors to live music, an opening reception for artists from Seagrove's Bulldog Pottery and the 1953 sci-fi flick Robot Monster.
The North Carolina Museum of Art hosts Art in the Evening every Friday with extended hours, live music and light fare. Browse the galleries then stay for the 1946 film, Beauty and the Beast.
Want to enjoy a First Friday out in the crisp fall air? Harris Lake County Park invites you to join them for an Evening Canoe Float and Bass Lake Park wraps up their season with one last Family Fun Night and Trish Miller Concert.

Fall Festivals
 

Bring the entire family out to Spring Forest Road Park for Kidsfest and enjoy a fun-filled day packed with food, entertainment, games and rides, and enjoyment for the entire family.

The North Carolina Zoo continues to celebrate the exotic, the endangered and the mysterious this weekend with a Parade of Puppets.
If you are looking for a great day trip or a fun weekend getaway, Wilmington is hosting Riverfest all weekend and Fort Fisher will be the site of the Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues & Jazz Festival.
Cary Eid Festival commemorates two world wide festivals, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The 5th Cary Eid Festival will present "Sacred Music - Rhythms of Religions" featuring Gospel and Nasheed, live music, and dances from around the world in addition to activities for children, ethnic food, bazaar, and cultural information.
 
Music, Movies & History
 
Bennett Place Historic Site will host a weekend long 150th Anniversary living history event.  The Road to Secession Civil War Reenactment will treat visitors to a Civil War enlistment encampment, baseball with the Greensboro Patriots, live music by the Huckleberry Brothers, 19th century photographer Robert Szabo, wagon rides by Ronald Hudson and his mules and authors and historians speaking in the Visitor Center Theater.
Bring your blanket and your lunch Saturday and enjoy the sounds of Brass at Bond at the Sertoma Amphitheater in Bond Park.
Durham's tobacco heritage is explored through the stories and experiences of Durham residents while you take a Durham Tobacco Heritage Walking Tour.
Sing! Dance! Play! with Jammin" Baby, a presenter of Music Together at Marbles Kids Museum. Come back Sunday for Science Solvers all about Spiders.
Visit the exhibit Cherokee Carvers: Tradition Renewed at the North Carolina Museum of History and see how many animals you can find. Then color a creature of your own in Make It, Take It: Cherokee Creatures. Sunday afternoon, Blind Boy Chocolate and the Milk She will delight visitors with a concert of early American music, including both black and white string-band and jug-band music.
Become a character and tell a story in a Behind the Mask workshop for Family Fun Saturdays at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
Bud Light CityFest is back Saturday night to the Raleigh Amphitheater with Ed Kowalczyk of LIVE. All seats are $5.
If you missed it in the theaters, Disney's African Cats will be playing in the big screen at the Holly Springs Cultural Center Saturday morning.
The Wake Forest Unplugged...Get Connected weekend will culminate on Sunday, with a concert in Joyner Park featuring Carolina Lightning. Residents are encouraged to arrive early, bring a picnic lunch, and take part in an array of planned games and activities, including sack and relay races, egg toss, corn hole, and hula hoop.
 
Fall in the Parks
 

Learn how animals master the art of camouflage, take a hike and play some games during  Custom Camo on the American Tobacco Trail.

Join a Eno River State Park Docent and Guide for a tour of the historic Piper-Cox House and learn about pioneer life in the early 1800's
Join a Ranger at Jordan Lake for an afternoon of paddling Weaver Creek on Saturday or Sunday. You are also invited to take a guided Nature Hike Saturday afternoon.
The Triangle Model Yacht Club will be back out at Lake Crabtree County Park Saturday morning racing their yachts.
Practice your birding skills with the Eno River State Park expert and see which birds call this state park home while you do some Birdwatching.
At Historic Yates Mill County Park, you are invited to take a Mill Heritage Tour or Paddle the Pond. Are you interested in volunteering your time at Yates Mill County Park? Join them Saturday morning for a Interest Session to learn the fun ways that you can help out at the park.
Speaking of volunteering, help keep the shores of Harris Lake County Park during Sunday's Fall Big Sweep.
Kids in Training will be hosting a Youth Triathlon Saturday at Lake Crabtree County Park. On Sunday, join a Wake County Extension Master Gardener to learn helpful hints on how to successfully garden from the fall into the winter
