After a crazy weather week, it looks like we are going to have a beautiful, sunny weekend. With Fall right around the corner, this weekend officially kicks off our fantastic festival season!
Kick Off the Weekend
The weekend starts early over at Regency Park with the movie True Grit. Join them for pre-movie entertainment with "Destination India," a special dance performance presents a musical journey to India.
The Music Off Main Concert Series is back for their final concert with Fantasy who will perform beach, motown and R&B tunes.
Fridays Made Easy is back at the Museum of Life and Science. Come visit the museum after dark. They will be keeping both the indoor and outdoor exhibits open late and offering light dinner and beer and wine for purchase.
Grab the blanket and the kids and head over to Moore Square Friday night for a free family movie. Finding Nemo will be the featured flick along with snacks, and fun for the whole family.
WUNC's Back Porch Music brings the Shady Grove Band to the American Tobacco Campus Amphitheatre.
On the second Friday night of each month the streets of Downtown Wake Forest come alive with food, merchants and music! We invite you to come and experience the dining, art and retail merchants of Downtown Wake Forest for Art After Hours.
Did you know the Plott Hound is the only dog breed known to have originated in North Carolina? Come on out to the North Carolina Museum of History for an exhibit opening, Our State Dog: North Carolina's Plott Hound.
Bring your tents and camping gear and spend the night sleeping under the stars at Lake Benson Park during their Family Camp Night. Whether you are staying for the camp out or just for the evening, Toy Story 3 will be the featured film at the Friday Family Flick.
Festivals and Fun
The Duke Homestead Historic Site will celebrate the harvesting season for tobacco with the Tobacco Harvest and Arts Festival. Come see costumed interpreters demonstrate tobacco harvesting, stringing, and curing. You can also witness the sounds of the only tobacco auction left in Durham.
In partnership with LEGO KidsFest, come build bridges and towers with LEGO masters while learning engineering techniques that allow you to build strong and high structures at Marbles Kids Museum.
Promoted by the country's oldest gourd society, the Annual North Carolina Gourd Arts & Crafts Festival features more than 70 growing, crafting, and artistic competitive categories, as well as workshops and vendors of gourd crafts, dried gourds, and gourd crafting supplies.
Will you be downtown Friday? You might want to swing by the State Farmers Market in Raleigh at lunchtime for Grape Day. There will be North Carolina Wine Tasting, North Carolina Grape Sampling, Free Recipes and plenty of delicious locally grown grapes to bring home.
Enjoy some Jolly Roger Tales & Landlubber Crafts during Pirate Day at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.
Family Fun Day in Historic Hillsborough on Saturday will include guided tours, children's activities, artisan demonstrations, and a farmers market in addition to Walkable Hillsborough Day and Colonial Kids Day at the Burwell School.
Living historians will demonstrate life of the Southern soldiers who served the Old North State during the American Civil War during a Soldiers of the Old North State encampment this weekend at Bennett Place State Historic Site.
Music for Every Groove
Hopscotch Music Festival returns to downtown Raleigh With 151 acts scheduled to play 13 venues within a walk-able section of the city from Thursday to Saturday. Most of the concerts do require tickets, but there are a handful of free concerts.
As a thank you to the community for 24 years of support, the Bull Durham Blues Festival is free this year. Head on over to Durham Central Park to enjoy the sounds of Will McFarlane, Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos, John Brown and the Groove Shop Band, Bobby Hinton, Harvey Dalton Arnold Blues Band, Rick Tobey, and Shana Tucker.
Grandparents accompanied by a grandchild will receive free admission to Marbles Kids Museum for Grandparent's Day. Come on out to enjoy special activities throughout the museum all day. Also Sunday at Marbles, Science Solvers will present NC First Robotics.
Lots More to do in the Parks
The state parks have plenty of fun programs this weekend. Eno River State Park invites you to explore the restored, historic Piper-Cox House.
Its a great time of year to head over to Yates Mill Historic Park and take one of their Heritage Tours of the first floor of the fully restored mill. You can also enjoy a morning Canoe Float on the millpond.
The Harris Energy & Environmental Center will be open on Saturday for Harris Community Day. Come check out the control room simulator, an exact replica of the plant's control room, and learn about plant operations, energy efficiency and emergency preparedness.
Just down the road at Harris Lake County Park, you are invited to bring the family to search for Nature's Cache with GPS units.
