Along with some fun concerts and movies, this is a great kid weekend. Whether you have a kindergartner heading off to school for the first time or some kids suffering from cabin fever after staying out of the heat for a few days, there are some super activities for you and your kids this weekend!

 

Second Saturday is back at the State Historic Sites
Duke Homestead State Historical Park is holding a Summer Children's Festival. Come enjoy enjoy music, dancing, historical crafts and activities, storytellers, and games.
In Downtown Raleigh, the State Capitol will feature Civil War Stories. Author Suzy Barile and artists Donata Guerra and Rebecca Paden will be showcasing their work.
Also in Downtown Raleigh, the North Carolina Museum of History will focus on New Salem Pottery. Watch potters from New Salem Pottery decorate bowls, vases, and other clay objects. You can make your own paper ornament to take home in a Make it, Take it event.
The North Carolina Museum of Art joins in on 2nd Saturdays with Family Fun Saturdays. This week's installment will invite families to take a gallery tour and participate in a workshop exploring artist Nick Cave's Soundsuits.
Bentonville State Historic Site will host Quilts from the Early 1800s to the Civil War highlighting the conservation of textiles ranging from military uniforms and flags to vintage clothing and quilts. Click through for the impressive list of speakers.
Authors of North Carolina will be featured at Bennett Place Historic Site. A collection of authors from across North Carolina will share their work with audiences on the grounds of the Bennett Farm. The 6th North Carolina Infantry will be encamped around the Bennett Farm all weekend and musician Joe Ayers, will delight visitors with his banjo music.
The Battleship North Carolina is a great day trip from the Triangle. This Saturday, the Carolina Living History Guild members will set up displays highlighting the history of the USS North Carolina and the CSS North Carolina during the Civil War. Navigate. Battleship 101 and Demonstrate will include reproductions of period small arms and working models of steam engines as well as on ship tours with volunteers stationed throughout the ship.
 
Celebrations & Family Festivals

Come to Hillsborough on Saturday for Family Fun Day. Family Fun Day will include guided tours, children's activities, artisan demonstrations, a farmers market, shopping, and dining.

Fire Departments from around the state will attend North Carolina's Main Street Fire Truck Parade. Units will include modern and antique apparatus, pipe and drum bands and fire department honor guards. After the parade, all the equipment will be available to check out and for picture opportunities.

The Museum of Life and Science will be celebrating Engineers Day. Meet Triangle area engineers responsible for several of the Museum exhibits and other cool technologies. Come participate in hands-on demonstrations and activities that are fun and educational for people of all ages.

Visit the Raleigh City Museum to learn more about North Carolina's Native Americans. Join them to learn about native life, such as the domestication of plants, and take home your very own sunflower! Cozy on up and listen to recordings of Native American Music Award winners and try your hand at weaving your own paper basket.

Come on out to Bass Lake Park for a little friendly competition, playing your favorite bingo games for Bass Lake Family Bingo.

Tuesday night at Marbles is Target $2 Tuesday Night.

The State Fairgrounds have a fun eclectic mix of events for the whole family. For you bargin hunters, the Children's Clothing and Baby Equipment Sale is back with tons of clothing, toys, equipment and everything kid related. And for you outdoor lovers, the Camptown RV Fall Expo will premier fall products at discount prices, provide in-depth information about RVing in a variety of workshops, and offer exciting raffle prizes. Train lovers will enjoy a Toy Train Sale and Swap Meet. Lastly, for those of you planning the big day, you will want to check out the Southern Bridal Show and Expo.

 

 

 

 

Concerts & Culture in the Triangle

2nd Friday Artwalk is back in Downtown Carrboro. Come on out to enjoy live music and other art related entertainment throughout the downtown galleries.

Art After Hours is also back Friday night. The second Friday night of each month, the streets of Downtown Wake Forest come alive with food, merchants and music.

Cool John Ferguson will be playing the tunes to kick off the weekend over at Durahm Central Park for a Warehouse Blues Concert.

Toes will be tapping in Holly Springs with the Alternative & Rock sounds of Effigy.

Music on the Porch is back Friday night at Mordecai Historic Park with Mel Melton & The Wicked Mojos, a smokin" Zydeco/Cajun flavored blues band out of North Carolina.

Come join Mike Raley and Anne Clapp of 680 WPTF The Weekend Gardener Show Live. There will be Prizes, free samples and gardening tips at the NC State Fairgrounds.

Katie Garfield, an acoustic guitar and solo performer will wind down your weekend with a Sunday in the Park Concert at Fred Fletcher Park.

 

 

 

 

Movies at the Parks & Museums

The 1923 classic Our Hospitality directed by Buster Keaton and Jack Blystone will be taking to the big screen Friday night at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

 

Movies on the Lawn at the American Tobacco Campus will bring two flicks to the outdoor screen. "One Night in Kernersville" was the winner of the 2011 Full Frame Jury Award for Best Short and "In Do It Again", a reporter sets out to reunite the Kinks.

A Volunteer Docent and Guide will be on hand at the Historic Piper-Cox House at Eno River State Park for tours and a glimpse into pioneer life in the early 1800's. Come back Sunday for a kid friendly program on Water Bugs.

Discover what Dragonflies can be found at Occoneechee Mountain on an easy guided hike around the ponds.

Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park will be offering Heritage Tours of the first floor of the fully restored mill both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday morning, you can see the park from a different perspective as you Paddle the Pond.

Learn the difference between toads and frogs, play some commonly heard amphibian calls and make a toad house for the toads in your backyard during Toadally Awesome on the American Tobacco Trail.
Head on over to Lake Lynn after dark and join them for a Full Moon Hike to observe wildlife as day fades into night.
