Memorial Day Observations

Memorial Day is about remembering and honoring those who served our nation. There will be a wonderful event on Monday keeping the meaning of the Holiday in mind. The St Francis Brass Band will be playing patriotic music and Pam Saulsby of WRAL TV will be singing the National Anthem at the State Capitol grounds. A wreath-laying ceremony in honor of those North Carolinians who served during times of war will take place at the Veterans' Monument.

Bennett Place will also honor our fallen soldiers with living history programs throughout the day Saturday focusing on the American Civil War.
Join the Raleigh City Museum Saturday to learn about civilian and military life in Raleigh and North Carolina during the 1940s. Costumed living historians will give a first hand representation of how life was on the home front and front lines during the Second Great War.

Fun at the Parks

Learn what trees need to grow, and "leaf" knowing how to identify common trees by their foliage at Leaf it to Me at Blue Jay Point County Park.

Spruce, in partnership with the Triangle Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, is recruiting volunteers to help maintain the Chatham County portion of the American Tobacco Trail through monthly workdays. Join them this Saturday for an American Tobacco Trail Workday.
If you would like to see a wide array of exotic birds, the North Carolina State Fairgrounds will be hosting a Bird Fair this weekend. The Fairgrounds will also host a Regional Morgan Horse Show.
The Triangle Model Yacht Club is at Lake Crabtree County Park just about every Saturday racing their radio control yachts.
The Durham FM Association, a group of friendly amateur radio operators invite the public to join them for Durham Fest at Little River Regional Park. There is an admission charge for the event.
Are you looking to be a little more spontaneous? Pre-registration not really your thing? The Triangle has several beautiful lakes that offer boat rentals so you can enjoy the serenity of the water at your own pace. Bass Lake Park, Durant Nature Park, Bond Park, Lake Benson, Lake Crabtree Park, Lake Johnson Park, Umstead State Park and Lake Wheeler all offer seasonal boat rental and they are all open for business this weekend!

Holiday Weekend in Wilmington

If you are one of the lucky ones heading east to the coast, we wanted to let you know about some fun stuff going on this weekend in the Wilmington Area. The Battleship North Carolina will be hosting the Annual Memorial Day Observance. Remember those who gave their lives in service and honor veterans at a traditional Memorial Day Observance featuring a military guest speaker, an all-service Color Guard, a 21-gun salute by a Marine Corps Honor Guard, military band, Taps, and a memorial wreath cast onto the waters.
The 2011 Downtown Sundown Concert Series starts Friday night at Riverfront Park in Downtown Wilmington. Appetite for Destruction will offer the Ultimate GnR Tribute. The Historic Downtown Riverfront hosts a Riverfront Farmer's Market Saturday morning which features local farmers, producers, artists and crafters.
Carolina Beach will be holding a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday as well as a Summer Concert with Fireworks on Friday night, Jazz Under the Stars on Saturday and Movies at the Lake on Sunday night. The featured movie will be Karate Kid. Saturday morning you can also browse the Carolina Beach Farmer's Market.
While you are in the Wilmington area, you may want to check out the Fort Fisher Aquarium. Membership to the three North Carolina Aquariums and the North Carolina Zoo are reciprocal. Our favorite is Luna, the albino alligator.
