The temperatures have sure been cool, but the weather can not dampen all the events going on this weekend. Whether you are looking for a way to honor Martin Luther King Jr., something cozy and warm to do inside or a stimulating outdoor hike ParkGeek.com has close to 30 events listed this weekend!
Martin Luther King, Jr. is Remembered in the Triangle
Martin Luther King, Jr. and all the high ideals he stood for will be remembered at the Annual Martin Luther King Memorial March in Downtown Raleigh on Monday.
The Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade will be held on Saturday in Durham.
Chapel Hill will Honor Martin L. King Jr. with a Rally, March and Worship Service on Monday.
Help your child grow into a dreamer, innovator and leader with special activities to celebrate Martin Luther King, JR Day at Marbles Kids Museum. Visit with community heroes, create a Dream Poetry collage and help stuff backpacks full of food for low-income families.
The Town of Cary will be hosting a Dreamfest Celebration Saturday, which includes kids crafts, an art exhibit, community expo and a concert by Sweet Potato Pie, as well as the Dream of Unity Observance on Sunday.
Stay Indoors and Stay Warm
Art in the Evening is back at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Kick off your weekend with a glass of wine and live music while you tour the galleries after dark. Finish the night off with a screening of the 1937 movie "Make Way for Tomorrow". On Saturday, the Art Museums welcomes families to join them for some family fun with Capture Me. Explore the galleries to look and connect with works of art that focus on containers; then create your own original art.
At Marbles Kids Museum, go global and try Turkish paper marbling with the American Turkish Association of North Carolina during another installment of Art-rageous.
Take a trip back in time at the North Carolina Museum of History when you go Marching with Washington's Army. Reenactors will interpret the daily experiences of Revolutionary War soldiers.
After breakfast Saturday morning, head on over to the Holly Springs Cultural Center and enjoy the movie Cats & Dogs The Revenge of Kitty Galore on the big screen.
The North Carolina State Fairgrounds will be hosting a wide variety of events this weekend. A Coin and Stamp Show, American Saddlebred Association of the Carolinas (ASAC) Winter Tournament and the Young Champions Tri-State Cheer Showcase are all free and open to the public.
A llittle outside the Triangle, the Natural Science Center of Greensboro is a fun destination for the whole family. Friday night, the Hypnotica Laser Showwill feature the music of Fat Boy Slim, Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers, Bjork and others. On Saturday, you are invited to Bertha the Burmese Python's Birthday Bash.
Get Outside for some Crisp, Fresh Air
Who Gives a Hoot will be a presentation at William B. Umstead State Park aor you can join a ranger on a Winter Tree ID hike.
If you haven't been to Downtown Raleigh's Winterfest Ice Rink, you have a couple more weeks. The outdoor ice rink will be open until January 31st. This weekend, in addition to ice skating, you will want to check out Sledding Sunday. Snowmyyard.com will create a winter wonderland with sledding ramps right in downtown. Thursday night, treat yourself and someone special to Date and Skate Night. Your skating wristband will also get you a free carriage ride. Fridays bring Rock around the Rink with DJs from Joe Bunn DJ Company. Tuesdays are Family Day so a family can skate for $20. Live music will fill the crisp, night air on Wednesdays for Music Craze Wednesdays.
Grab your binoculars for some Birdwatching at Eno River State Park or take a tour of the Historic Piper-Cox House.
Right next door, West Point on the Eno will be exploring the habitat of an urban beaver on a Beaver Life Hike.
