We hope you had a fabulous New Year! Whether you are ready to get out and get active in 2010 or you are looking for somewhere to unwind from the holidays, we have some great events this weekend.
First Friday & More!
First Friday is back at the The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences with The Sixth Finger, one of the first episodes from the popular 1960s sci-fi television series "Outer Limits".
Both Marbles Kids Museum and the Raleigh City Museum invite you to enjoy First Friday extended hours in addition to special activities.
Also at Marbles this weekend, Saturday brings Music Makers with the NC Symphony - The Mozart Experience and on Sunday you can join in on Science Solvers.
Bundle up and head to Downtown Raleigh to Rock around the Rink at the Winterfest Ice Rink. DJs from Joe Bunn DJ Company will rock the rink Fridays in January.
The fun at the Ice Rink continues all week with Sledding Sundays, Family Tuesdays, Music Craze Wednesdays and Date and Skate Thursdays .
The North Carolina Museum of Art ushers is the weekend with Rockwell Family Fridays, a family-friendly exhibition and Art in the Evening, featuring the film "Bigger Than Life".
Bring the kids back to the Art Museum on Saturday for Fins and Feathers on the Front Porch, an engaging selection of children's stories or What Time Is It?, a Family Fun Saturday activity about works of art relating to time.
Getting Some Fresh Air at our Area Parks
Kickoff to a Healthy New Year! on the American Tobacco Trail will be a great way to kick off any New Years resolutions relating to health and fitness. Wake County has partnered with Rex Health Care to provide free health risk assessment screenings, blood pressure checks, body mass index calculations and nutrition advice.
Under a starry night sky enjoy telescopic views of beautiful objects, including planets, nebulae, star clusters and of course, the moon at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. The monthly Skywatching sessions are a great way to observe the night sky.
For you early risers, you can join in on a Winter Waterfowl Watch at Lake Crabtree County Park. Come join park staff as we venture out in canoes to view Ruddy Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, Black Ducks, Northern Shovelers and other species.
Historic Yates Mill County Park is hosting a Winter Tea Party. Bring your favorite doll and learn tea party etiquette before enjoying finger sandwiches and tea. Take a short hike on Sunday to discover where some of the millpond's wildlife takes cover when it's cold outdoors during Winter Woodland Wonders.
Any weekend is a good time to check out our wide variety of state parks, but this weekend there are some special events to make your visit even more fun. Head over to the Eno River State Park and enjoy one of many fun guided programs. Join a Volunteer Guide and hike to the Cabe Family Mill site.
In addition to Eno River State Park, William B. Umstead here in the Triangle and Raven Rock in Lillington are two other great nearby state parks with lots of awesome trails for any level of adventure. Umstead Park is offering Hiking at William B. Umstead State Park. The program will introduce visitors to the park, discuss hiking safety tips and include a short walk.
Lots of Fun Indoors
Could you make a house out of what you find in the forest? Drop in Saturday on Make It, Take it: Wigwams at the North Carolina Museum of History and you will not only learn about the wigwam but also make your own miniature wigwam to take home. Come back to the museum Sunday for a Music of the Carolinas concert by acclaimed folk musicians, Sparky and Rhonda Rucker.
Toy Story 3 will be the featured flick at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.
Sunday at the Sertoma Arts Center will be a celebration of the work of artists Jody Cassell, Michelle Davis Petelinz, and Alison McCauley during a Gallery Show.
Robots & More at the Fairgrounds
The Robotics Regional Tournament in April will feature competition between 44 teams from across the country and Brazil. Come on over to the Dorton Areana for the Robotics Kickoff Event this Saturday to see how the competition is shaping up.
Are you dreaming of getting out on the water this Spring? You will want to check out the Bass & Salt Water Fishing Expo. The fishing show includes boats, tackle, fish displays, charters, seminars, electronics and instruction.
The Hunt Horse Complex is hosting a Team Roping Competition for you horse enthusiasts.
Nearly 70 exhibitors and 175 tables will be selling sport cards and NASCAR collectibles at the Sports Card Collectibles Show.
