Movies, Concerts & Festivals

Wander the galleries with friends Friday evening as you enjoy the extended hours and the 1993 movie Dave during Iris after Dark at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Pizza and a Movie comes to the Halle Thursday night with the flick Christopher Robin. The Halle Cultural Arts Center invites the whole family to join them for a Family Dance Friday evening featuring Traditional Dance Caller, Connie Carringer and a live old-time string band.

Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will feature Research from Rubbish: The Early History of Paleotolgy. Learn about scientists' competitive relationships and about the surprising ways that new discoveries about dinosaurs sometimes happened.

The NC Museum of Natural Sciences partners with NASA and the Raleigh Astronomy Club to host Astronomy Days Saturday and Sunday. There will be a full weekend of expert speakers, exhibits and lots of hands on activities. Click through for the whole line up.

Join the North Carolina Museum of History to kickoff Black History Month with Saturday's African American Cultural Celebration. More than 75 musicians, storytellers, dancers, historians, playwrights, authors, artists, reenactors, chefs, teachers, scholars, and more will be on hand to help tell the rich and varied stories of our state and the continued quest of defining and working for freedom.

LEGO-palooza returns to the Morehead Planetarium both Saturday and Sunday with LEGO exhibits displayed throughout the building. Come see scenes of outer space, trains, amusement parks, city landmarks and more! This year they are managing admission with free tickets so please click through for information. LEGO-palooza will also have LEGO activities and food trucks.

Entries for both the adult and youth Mill as Muse Art and Photography Contests are due by next Friday. All artists are invited to Historic Yates Mill County Park Sunday afternoon for a Mill as Muse Creative Art Session. They will have the opportunity to craft a work of art to take home or to enter into the "Mill as Muse" art contest.

Durham Central Park will host a Food Truck Rodeo Sunday afternoon. In addition to a wide array of food trucks, Selector B Steady will make winter feel like SUMMER with Rocksteady, Reggae, Roots and Dub, African Funk, Peruvian and Cumbia vinyls!!

Holly Springs Cultural Center's Monday Morning Movie will be Frozen.

Fun at the Parks

Prairie Ridge Ecostation for Wildlife Learning continues to hold a Nature Storytime every Thursday morning and Citizen Science Opportunities every Saturday. The Nature PlaySpace will be stocked with extra special materials and supplies and a Museum play facilitator will be present during Nature Play Days every Tuesday morning and Saturday afternoon.

Join them at Crowder County Park Friday after dark for the Deep Sleep as they explore the park at night and learn about hibernation, brumation, and estivation.

Gather around the Campfire for an evening of storytelling, nature, and marshmallows Friday after dark at Durant Nature Park.

Jordan Lake will explore the Birds of the Lower Haw River Saturday morning. View migratory waterfowl and learn about Bald Eagles and other birds that you can spot and identify!

Before you venture out into the woods, learn what things you should stay away from Saturday at Falls Lake when they learn about Dangerous Plants and Animals.

Take the longest of their long hikes series Saturday at Eno River State Park. Join a Naturalist for a tromp through the state park's section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. You'll hike approximately 8 miles from Pleasant Green to the Guess Road access.

Sunday's Winter Hike at West Point on the Eno Park will explore the most scenic stretch of the Eno River past many rock outcrops and rapids to the stone ruins of the old Holden Mill.

Crowder District Park's Family Feature Monday will feature Splendid Snowflakes. They will bring the materials if you bring the imagination!

Join an Umstead Ranger for a Night Hike Tuesday after dark. Hike at night to see and hear different wildlife and experience the outdoors in a new way. You will hike to the Crabtree Creek on the Company Mill trail and spend some time quiet and stationary in various spots along the trail to see if you can coax out some of night time animal friends.

Fun at the Fairgrounds

Celebrate the Year of the Rooster at Saturday's Chinese New Year Celebration at the State Fairgrounds. There will be Chinese and Asian cultural performances (including the famous lion and dragon dances), exhibits, food, merchandise vendors and arts and crafts for the entire family to enjoy.

The Hunt Horse Complex will host an Indoor Winter Classic Horse Show Thursday through Sunday.

Also this weekend at the Fairgrounds, the Flyball Tournament returns! Come watch the flyball dogs. Each dog jumps 4 hurdles and steps on a spring loaded box, which shoots out a tennis ball. The dog catches the ball and runs back over the 4 hurdles. When the dog crosses the starting line the next dog goes. The first team to have all 4 dogs run without errors wins the heat.
