Independence Day is almost here! Where did June go? The weather forecasters are promising a break in the heat this weekend so hopefully we can enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities.
Fun throughout the Triangle
There is quite an eclectic mix of events this weekend. If you are trying to get out of the heat, remember we have a handful of free museums in Raleigh.
Along with free admission every day, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences invites you to their special exhibit, Dig It! through August 16th. They also have daily story times, meet the animals and a discovery room. Extended hours for Science Thursday will explore Burried Treasures, the amazing aspects of soil microbes.
The Halle Cultural Arts Center invites you to an Opening Reception for the Colored Pencil Society of America Friday evening.
The North Carolina Museum of History offers free admission and the awesome permanent exhibit "The Story of North Carolina." Their special exhibit "Starring North Carolina!" will be there until September 7th. This week, you can take a Saturday in the Garden tour of the History of the Harvest exhibit along Bicentennial Plaza.
June Goes out wiith Music
The bands Trial By Fire, My 3 Sons and I Am Maddox will all be part of this Thursday's Oak City 7 Concerts in Raleigh's City Plaza.
The Sweet Carolina Music Series brings The Entertainers to the stage at Downtown Chapel Hill's University Mall Thursday evening.
The John Henry Band will be playing the family friendly Summer at the Springs Outdoor Concert Friday night at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.
The Morning After will be playing a Friday on the Front Porch Concert at the Carolina Inn with the food trucks Chickenque and Soom Soom.
The Triangle Brass Band will present Pops in the Park Friday night at the Sertoma Amphitheater in Bond Park.
Also in Cary, there will be a Celebration of Bluegrass with Pattie Hopkins, Lynda Dawson, and Charles Pettee Friday evening at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center.
The Triangle Brass Band will be at the Apex Nature Park Amphitheatre Saturday evening for an encore performance.
Movies after Dark
Movies Under the Stars in Downtown Chapel Hill will kick off the weekend early with the movie Apollo 13 Thursday after dark.
Come enjoy The Lego Movie at Parrish Womble Park Friday after dark with free popcorn and drinks. Picnics are welcome also.
Movies by Moonlight brings Gone Girl to the big screen Friday night at Regency Park.
Babe will be the free Monday Morning Movie at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.
Fun at the Parks
Learn how Umstead State Park grew from Farm to Forest on this guided 1 1/2 mile nature walk through the dynamic and ever-changing environment Friday afternoon.
Come and learn about Occoneechee Mountain's geologic wonders Saturday afternoon as you explore the Pyrophyllite Quarry with a real geologist!
Bring your kids to Jordan Lake Saturday morning so they can Catch a Sure Thing (C.A.S.T.). This program is designed for youth ages 6 to 12 who have little to no experience with fishing and who want to learn.
They will be playing a Family Edition of Critter Trivia Saturday at Lake Crabtree County Park. Teams will compete for prizes while discovering more about the wildlife found in the North Carolina Piedmont.
They are throwing a Pollinator Party Saturday at Raven Rock State Park. There will be fun educational activities a Naturalist and Hummingbird expert will be talking about hummingbirds and a local beekeeper will have live bees.
Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the National Wildlife Federation"s Great American Backyard Campout by spending a night under the stars at Lake Benson Park. A scavenger hunt and other family activities will be available throughout the evening Saturday.
After dark Saturday, you are invited to take an Evening Hike at Harris Lake County Park or go Spider Sniffing at Lake Crabtree County Park.
Kids can learn how to become a Junior Ranger Sunday at Eno River State Park and adults can join them for a a long-ish 7.5 mile hike on their section of the Mountains-to-Sea-Trail.
If you missed Lake Crabtree"s Pollinator Festival, or just want a more focused look at bees, kids 6-12 years old will want to check out Beezzzz Monday afternoon at Lake Crabtree County Park.
Come out to Umstead State Park Tuesday for a guided half mile hike along Pott's Branch Trail and a lesson on Soil and Landforms.
