Happy Valentines Day! Have a wonderful day with your special people on Saturday. This will be a jam packed weekend full of festivals, history, art and birdwatching!

 

Friday through Monday is the Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. See below for all the details, but there are lots of fun opportunities to contribute to the count and learn all about our local feathered friends.

The temperatures are going down this weekend so if you want to celebrate the magic of winter one last time, the Ice Factory at American Tobacco will be open for ice skating through February 15th.

Art, Music & History

The ongoing exhibit, Starring North Carolina, brings another local film to the screen Friday night. Shot around Wilmington, including scenes at Orton Plantation, Oakland Plantation, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, Firestarter's filming was the revival of filmmaking in Wilmington.

Also, Friday at the NC Museum of History you are invited to bring in up to three objects to the museum for assessment and advice on care from their conservators. Conservation Assistance Day does require an appointment so make sure to call ahead.

In honor of Black History Month, the North Carolina Museum of History will be offering African American History Tours Saturday afternoon along with a Make it, Take it activity where you can make Paper Heart-y Greetings and see some valnetines of days past.

Friday night at the NC Museum of Art makes a great date night with Friday Night Sound Bites that focus on the varied sources in a contemporary American painting. The Beast will provide live music for Art in the Evening. After you wander the galleries, stay for the 1944 French film, Frenchman's Creek.

The fun continues all weekend at the NC Museum of Art. Check out a Weekend Family Friendly Tour or explore the 164 acre campus on a Meet Your Museum Tour. You are also invited to take a tour of the Allen G. Thomas Jr. Photography Collection Saturday.

All the entries are in and you are invited to see them all at Sunday's Muse Artists Reception. Come applaud the art and photography contest winners, and meet some of the artists.

Join Cmdr. William Tschundy, Brig. Gen. Norman Gaddis, and Col. Hien Vo Monday evening at the North Carolina Museum of History for a presentation of American POWs and Vietnamese Re-Education Camps.

The Holly Springs Cultural Center will be showing Stuart Little as their Monday Morning Movie. Also at the Cultural Center, adults are invited to join the Holly Springs Bookworms Tuesday evening.

The Halle Cultural Arts Center will be showing Tarzan as their Tuesday Morning Movie.

Festivals, Parades & Shows

Spend Valentine's Day learning about Charles Darwin and what his theories of natural selection have done for the world of science, research and education. Darwin Day on Saturday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will celebrate Darwin's theories through hands-on science-education stations, speakers, displays of cutting edge research, crafts and games for all ages!

 

The Mardi Gras Street Festival in Wake Forest Saturday promises fun-filled activities for both children and adults including face painting a walking parade, costume contests.

As an added bonus, you are also invited to the Cougar March in Downtown Wake Forest Saturday afternoon for a special community celebration in honor of the 2014 Wake Forest High School football team.

Bring your Valentine to the State Fairgrounds this weekend. Starting Thursday and running all weekend, the NC International Auto Expo will highlight new production models and concept cars with car, truck and sports utility vehicle manufacturers on display.

Celebrate Mardi Gras Tuesday in Durham at the annual Durham Mardi Gras Parade. Enjoy the parade and then stay for the best in food and music from Louisiana with a North Carolina twist.

The Great Backyard Bird Count

This weekend celebrates the Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. A national four day event that encourages bird watchers to count birds and report their results online to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Bird Count is a featured event at several parks around the Triangle. Some of the events do require registration so click through for all the details

Harris Lake joins in the festivities with Bird Walks daily Friday through Monday, an Intro to Bird Watching Friday afternoon, Birdapalooza, their annual Birding festival on Saturday and an Owl Prowl Saturday night.

 

Crowder District Park invites you to join them for Breakfast with the Birds Hike Friday morning and a Backyard Bird Count on Sunday. Also at Crowder Park, they will be celebrating Happy Valentine's Day Mother Nature on Saturday with a family program.

Historic Yates Mill County Park also welcomes you to join into the Bird count for Love Birds, a program about courtship rituals on Saturday and Breakfast with the Birds Monday morning.

Lake Crabtree County Park is hosting Bird Count Walks each morning Friday through Monday, Love Birds on Saturday, Lifestyles of the Winged and Feathered on Sunday and Junior Birder Patch Program on Monday.

Meet up with other birders Sunday morning and Monday afternoon for guided Bird Walks along the American Tobacco Trail.

Counting is for the Birds over at Blue Jay County Park Monday. Enjoy a couple bird stories, some fun bird activities then get out and count.

Gather at Kids Together Playground at Marla Dorrel Park to Count the Birds Saturday as you identify birds by species and record the number of each that you see. Then enjoy refreshments as they tally the results.

Little River Regional Park invites you to come to the park to pick up instructions and then count birds at the park or in your own backyard.

White Deer Park also invites you to swing by their Nature Center to pick up your checklist and learn how the Great Backyard Bird Count works.
