Whether you are into the crisp cold air of winter or are waiting for the warm winds of spring to come, there is everything from marches & parades to popcorn celebrations and birdwatching to make for a great long weekend!

Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr Day and there are several observances here in the Triangle.
 
The Paige Walker Arts & History Center will host the annual Women of Action Gathering Friday evening as part of Cary's MLK, Jr. Dreamfest events. Keynote Speaker, Mrs. Evelyn Morgan-Mahon will share her perspective on empowering women and recognizing their unique value and impact on family and community.
 
Dreamfest continues Saturday with A Dream of Community at the Cary Theater. Dr. King's sister in law Mrs. Naomi King and her husband A.D. King will be there to present how they worked behind the scenes to fulfill her brother-in-law's dreams for community.
 
You are invited to join Walking for Unity, Still Marching For the Dream in Downtown Holly Springs Sunday afternoon. Enjoy hot dogs at the Holly Springs Ace Hardware, march to the Holly Springs Cultural Center and then stay for a commemorative program with speakers, music and inspriations.
 
Cary's MLK, Jr. Dreamfest continues Sunday with An Arts Tribute to Martin at the Page Walker Arts & History Center. "I Rise Still" is a dramatic presentation of collected works by black writers that celebrates spirituality and collective introspection through each passionately performed monologue, dance and song.
 
Downtown Raleigh will host a Memorial March on Monday morning as a peaceful and somber way to show appreciation for the contributions of the historic Civil Rights Movement.
 
UNCMLK2015 on the Campus of UNC in Chapel Hill will span Sunday through Tuesday with a 5K, Rally & March, Lecture, photo exhibit, film screening and poetry & music tribute. Click through for all the details.
 
The MLK Day of Service is a national campaign urging citizens to give back to their community on the King holiday. The Town of Cary invites you to volunteer with the Spruce Program Monday as they beautify and clean up the Middle Creek Community Center Park and grounds.
 
You are also invited to join the volunteers from the MLK, Jr. Dreamfest: Day of Service 2015 at a Celebration of Service featuring local choral groups and other performers at Middle Creek Park Monday afternoon.
 
Help them celebrate community heroes on MLK Day at Marbles. Meet local heroes like a firefighter, teacher and veterinarian. You can be a helpful hero too - Pack food for the Backpack Buddies program to provide healthy food for children in need and create handmade blankets for local hospitals and shelters with Project Linus.

This week's Science Thursday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science will explore Ebola Diagnostics in North Carolina from Planning to Waiting and Game Night.

 

Come visit Mordecai Historic Park for Free Friday. Take a guided tour of the Mordecai House and grounds, St. Mark's Chapel, and the birthplace of our 17th President, Andrew Johnson. Free tours only happen twice a year, so don't miss out!
 
Art in the Evening returns this Friday night with the band Peter Lamb and the Wolves. In addition to the 1944 movie On Approval, you can enjoy a lively, in-depth exploration entitled History Incarnate with a Museum docent or take a Third Friday Tour.
 
Come on out to Downtown Durham to enjoy a Gallery crawl with live music and more for Third Friday.
 
Family Fun Night is a free, after-hours program exclusively for kids with special needs and their families to play at Marbles Kids Museum in a calmer, quieter environment Friday evening for free.

Lake Crabtree County Park is hosting a Winter Waterfowl Workshop for adults Saturday. Learn how to identify some of Lake Crabtree"s winter visitors as you meet your Criteria II or III NC-EE Credits.
 
Come to a Night Prowl Saturday after dark at Blue Jay Point County Park to practice using your senses to compensate for the dark.
 
Take a Winter Hike Sunday afternoon at Harris Lake County Park.
 
Explore their new trail on a Winter Tree Walk Sunday afternoon at Crowder District County Park.
 
Hike past the Cabe Homestead to the mill ruins and talk about it"s history on Sunday afternoon at Eno River State Park.
 
This Sunday's Winter Hike at West Point on the Eno Park will explore the Pump Station History.
 
Celebrate National Popcorn Day at Yates Mill this Monday! Learn about all different varieties of corn and what gives popcorn that unique POP! Take part in a creative popcorn-themed craft, and enjoy some fresh popped popcorn.

Pop some popcorn and bring the kids over to the Holly Springs Cultural Center for their Saturday morning family movie. This weekend they feature the kid favorite, The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

 

The Raleigh Winterfest Ice Rink is still open in Downtown Raleigh's City Plaza. The rink will be open Monday and offers Two for Tuesday pricing specials, Date and Skate Thursdays and Rock around the Rink Fridays.
 
The Ice Factory at American Tobacco will be open through February 15th and Thursday nights.are theme nights.
 
Join Marbles for playful Story Time every Saturday morning in January. This month, listen to stories that celebrate all different kinds of heroes, like firefighters, police officers and kids-in-action too!
 
Get your paintbrushes and cameras ready and try to capture the best images of Yates Mill and the surrounding park, then plan to enter this year's Mill as Muse Art and Photography Contest. Entries are due by February 1st.
 
Hear about chilly North Carolina fun from the past, and create a Snowflake to take home at a Make it, Take it program Saturday at the North Carolina Museum of History.
 
Explore the Power of Wind, design your own windmill out of a milk carton turbine, and see which windmill can pull up weight the fastest Sunday at Marbles Kids Museum. Come back Tuesday for some Hockey Fun with the Carolina Hurricanes.
 
Robin Hood will be the Tuesday Morning Movie at the Halle Cultural Arts Center.
 
Come join the Holly Springs Bookworms, an adult book club that meets at the Cultural Center the third Tuesday of every month.
 
Fun at the Fairgrounds
 
Coins, postcards and stamps (U.S., foreign, ancient, gold & silver) will be available all weekend at the Carolina Coin and Stamp Show.

 

The Hunt Horse Complex at the Fairgrounds will be hosting a Hunter Jumper Horse Show. Admission is free and the atmosphere is very casual, but its a great opportunity to get up close and see some beautiful horses and their riders perform at their best.
 
Repticon, a reptile and exotic animal convention will be at the Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday showcasing vendors from around the country offering live animals, animal supplies and related merchandise.
