There will be a wonderful event on Monday keeping the meaning of the Holiday in mind. A military encampment will be set up on the State Capitol grounds. A wreath-laying ceremony in honor of those North Carolinians who served during times of war will take place at the Veterans' Monument. Bennett Place will also honor our fallen soldiers with living history programs throughout the day focusing on the American Civil War. Fun at the Parks: Learn how to identify the Frogs of Lake Crabtree by their calls. You'll go on a hike through the monitoring area of the park to look for tree frogs. They will be Going Batty over at the American Tobacco Trail. Through bat games and a walk in search of bats flying around, you will learn all about these little mammals that do us such a great service! If you would like to see a wide array of exotic birds, the North Carolina State Fairgrounds will be hosting a Bird Fair this weekend. Campers, boaters, and park visitors at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area are invited to attend Severe Weather SKYWARN Spotter Training offered by the National Weather Service. Learn how and why buildings fail in high winds, thunderstorm severity and development, storm cloud events, cloud structure, and lightening dynamics and threats. Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park invites you to join them for a Mill Heritage Tour. The tours incorporate a discussion about the Mill's business and social history, some background on the mill's owners and a guided tour of the first floor of the fully restored mill. The tours will run both Saturday and Sunday. If you haven't been over to Yates Mill County Park, it is a great weekend destination. The interpretive center has wonderful displays explaining how the mill worked and the wildlife that lives in the park. The mill is beautiful and there are some great trails and flower gardens around the park. First-time visitors or park veterans are welcome to join It's Your Park, a program to introduce the unique qualities of Eno River State Park through a hike. Using live specimens, the Naturalist at Eno River State Park will teach visitors about the Eno Reptiles. Or, at Eno River State Park, you can go on a Birdwatching hike. Join park staff for a Canoe Tour of Lake Crabtree. Learn basic paddling techniques, look for birds and other wildlife along the shore, and see the park from a new perspective. Are you looking to be a little more spontaneous? Pre-registration not really your thing?
