It looks like another fabulous weekend! With over 100 events listed on ParkGeek.com this week, we are going to hit the highlights in this week's newsletter. Please go to the ParkGeek.com Event Search for the complete listing.
 

Right on the heels of Memorial Day, Operation Omaha/USO of NC will be taking 100 WWII Veterans to the National D-day Memorial for the 70th anniversary of the battle. You are invited to both the Send-Off Ceremony on Thursday and the Welcome Home Ceremony on Friday at the State Fairgrounds.

 

They will Celebrate Fuquay Varina on Saturday with a Downtown Festival, but the fun starts Thursday night with a concert by Spare Change. Make sure you go back Saturday to enjoy two Kid Zones, live entertainment, a BMX show, the Fuquay Cruisers, arts & crafts vendors, festival food, a Community Showcase, and the En Plein Air Auction.
 
Science Trivia is back to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences Thursday evening along with extended hours and Muddy Microbes in Your Own Backyard. Bring a soil sample from your garden or compost pile.
 

The Downtown Raleigh Bluegrass Concert Series brings food trucks, local beers and the bluegrass duo Lynda Dawson & Pattie Hopkins to Raleigh's City Plaza Thursday evening.

Bring the whole family to the Halle Cultural Arts Center Thursday evening for a Family Dance. Traditional Dance Caller Connie Carringer, will teach fun dances for the whole family.
 
The Find Your Cool Summer Concert Series continues Thursday evening at the CCB Plaza with a concert featuring Nikki Hill.
 
Its Throwback Thursday at Booth Amphitheater at Regency Park with the 1980's movie Caddyshack.
 

First Friday

The PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series will feature the sounds of Outside Soul and the movie Dirty Dancing at Raleigh's City Plaza Friday night.

First Friday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences brings the movie "Superargo and the Faceless Giant" to the big screen along with live music by Jacob Dowdy & Daniel Delorenzo, discount tickets to their special exhibit, Rainforest Adventure, and an opening reception for artist Daniel McClendon.
 
Marbles Kids Museum offers First Friday extended hours as well as Project Dance with American Dance Festival. Get moving to African beats, and learn about the instruments involved.
 
Its Latin Night with Orchestra International La Clave in Downtown Cary Friday night as part of their Seven O'clock Rock Series.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art will be exploring Becoming a Mother in the African Gallery and showing the outdoor movie Philomena.
 
City Market will host the usual First Friday festivities with shopping, beverage vendors and live music by Suicide Blonde. You are also invited to explore the First Friday Gallery Walk throughout the galleries and restaurants in Raleigh and extended hours at the Raleigh City Museum.
 
The Halle Cultural Arts Center invites you to the Opening Reception of the Diverge and Return Exhibit, a show featuring Apex High School Seniors, Alumni, and Teachers Friday evening.
 
Head on over to Bass Lake Park Friday night for their monthly Family Fun Night. Start with some fishing, arts & crafts and live animal demos and end with a special kids show.
 
Historic Yates Mill County Park also invites you to join them after dark for an Early Summer Hike. Learn tips for observing wildlife & find out ways to identify the sounds made by birds, amphibians and insects as the sun goes down.
 
Durant Nature Park will be having Fun with Fireflies Friday night. Come make a firefly catcher and spend time catching fireflies for closer inspection.

Festivals, Fairs & Special Events

Cary celebrates the Dog Days of June this Saturday at Bond Park with a Canine Frisbee Disc Competition, Dog wash, Rabies Vaccines & Microchipping Clinics as well as local dog rescue groups and a variety of vendors

Historic Oak View County Park will turn back the clock to the 1930's on Saturday for a
Folk Festival. Along with crafts and activities, Dr. Katherine Charron will be presenting a talk on African-Americans and women in the rural South during the Great Depression.

 

 

Durham Central Park will be celebrating the Best of the Triangle 2014 Party Saturday. Come to Durham Central Park to share in the food, drinks, live music, crafts and fun!
 
Saturday is the Annual Beaver Queen Pageant at Duke Park. Come enjoy the annual neighborhood "pageant" featuring live music and fun.
 
Saturday is Family Outdoor Conservation Day at Lake Wheeler Park. Wake County Ducks Unlimited and the City of Raleigh will host the event which features outdoor education activities, kids fishing derby (ages 6-12), games and an archery range.
 
This Saturday's Maker Faire at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds is expanding to be bigger and better. Come celebrate things people create themselves - from electronic gizmos to "slow made" foods and homemade clothes.
 
This weekend, the State Fairgrounds will also host a Gem & Jewelry Show, the Southeast Regional Hereford Show and an Open Breed Horse Show.
 
Kick off Summer right with a clambake, cold craft beer, live music, local art and a Caribbean-style seafood feast at the 2nd Annual N.C. Fresh Catch Raleigh at Moore Square Saturday.
 
Saturday is Crawfish Day at the State Farmers Market. Get there early because they will sell out!
 
Join the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on Saturday for a special Scout Discount Day! Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and their guests will be eligible for the discounted group rate of $4 per person for entry to the Rainforest Adventure special exhibition.

Join the Butterfly House staff at the Museum of Life and Science as they celebrate the fourth annual Butterfly Education and Awareness Day on Saturday.

Come downtown Sunday to enjoy the Downtown Raleigh Food Truck Rodeo with over 50 trucks. There will be tables and chairs along the way for on-street seating for over 1,000 people and a bubble/street chalk art zone.
 

Music, Movies & History

Tours are back at Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park! Join them Saturday for a Half Hour Tour of the main power drive and milling machinery of the fully restored mill. Sunday brings Mill Heritage & Local History Tours.

Thor: The Dark World will kick off the Outdoor Movie Series Saturday at the new Apex Nature Park.
 
The Old North State Brass Band will be performing Saturday night at the Sertoma Amphitheater at Bond Park.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art invites you to a screening of Viva la causa -The Story of Cesar Chavez and a Great Movement for Social Justice Saturday afternoon and an Outdoor Movie, Captain Phillips after dark. The NCMA Book Club also invites you to join them Saturday morning for a discussion of the book The Passion of Artemisia.
 
Mosquitoes, Humans and Disease: Historical Scourge & Modern Threats will be the topic explored at Saturday's Science Saturday program at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
 
Join the North Carolina Museum of History's garden staff Saturday for an informal tour of the History of the Harvest exhibit along Bicentennial Plaza and see what's going on out there!
 
Come back to the North Carolina Museum of History Sunday afternoon for a Music of the Carolinas concert with the Gravy Boys.
 
Chavis Community Center will host this week's Sunday in the Park Concert Series featuring the Raleigh Jazz Orchestra.
 
Millbrook Exchange Community Center will host its first annual Homeschool Fair and Fun Day on Tuesday for kids ages 5-13.

National Trails Day

 

We celebrate National Trails Day here is the Triangle with a wide variety of volunteer opportunities, guided hikes & programs and celebrations.
 

Join REI and many of their area partners for a celebration of bikes and trails at Sunday's Fat Tire Festival at Lake Crabtree County Park.

There will be volunteer workdays at many of the county and state parks on Saturday. Most do request that you register so they have a good idea of how many people will be helping. Click through for all the details.
 
Parks with Trail Day Workdays include Lake Crabtree, Falls Lake, Eno River and Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve.
 
Wake Forest will celebrate National Trails Day Saturday at E. Carroll Joyner Park with an Environmental Education Expo and Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony.
 
Lake Crabtree invites you to go Birding with Vernon early Saturday or hike the Lake Trail Hike all the way around the lake Saturday afternoon. The Triangle Model Yacht Club will be at the Lake both Saturday and Sunday for their Triangle Cup Regatta. On Sunday, take on some Tree Trivia.
 
Disc Golf Professionals will be at Harris Lake County Park Saturday to provide instruction for beginners or advanced skills for the more experienced so everyone can enjoy Family Disc Golf..
 
Experts will also be on hand to help beginners learn the sport of Geocaching Saturday along the American Tobacco Trail.
 
Eno River State Park will be doing some Beginning Fishing, taking a Beaver Observation Hike and exploring Water Bugs on Saturday. They will be taking a Morning Hike and discussing Park Invaders on Sunday.
 
Prairie Ridge Ecostation will celebrate National Trails Day and the grand opening of the new Prairie Ridge-Reedy Creek Greenway Connector on Saturday with a Volksmarch Habitat Hike. The hike will traverse through some of North Carolina's most diverse natural trails and hikers can catch a shuttle back to Prairie Ridge at the end.
 
Its also another Citizen Science Saturday at Prairie Ridge Ecostation.You are invited to come back Saturday night for a Firefly Watch.
