Spring is officially here!

Kick the Weekend Off


The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences expands their Thursday night events. Not only do they offer expanded hours, discount tickets to the special exhibit and a Science Cafe, but also interactive exhibits, club meetings and even a child drop off event once a month. This Thursday, the Sci-fi Book Club will be meeting before the Science Cafe explores Remote Controlled Cockroaches.

North Carolina Museum of Art starts every weekend off in their lobby-turned-lounge. Join them this Friday with live music by Sidecar Social Club, Sound Bites on Continuing Traditions and the 1950 William Holden, Gloria Swanson movie, Sunset Boulevard.
 

Looking to spend an evening without the kids? Drop them off at Walnut Creek Wetlands Center Friday for Kid's Nature Night. Kids 6-12 will spend a fun night doing crafts, taking a nature walk and watching a movie all around a theme.

Fun Festivals
 
Enjoy the beautiful weather Saturday at Cary's Annual Kite Festival at Bond Park. There will be an expert kite flyer on hand for stunt kite demonstrations as well as a variety of award categories. Come early and your kids can make and decorate a kite in one of their Kite Making Classes

 

Discover Indian cultural arts through dance, music, cultural cuisine, and traditional crafts in a Bazaar-style atmosphere during IndiaFest both Saturday and Sunday at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. Click through for the schedule of events and admission information.
 
Head on over to the North Carolina State Farmers Market Saturday for the NC Arbor Day Celebration. There will be exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on activities for kids.
 
Garner will also be celebrating Arbor Day on Friday over at White Deer Park. Go to the Nature Center to pick up your tree and planting instructions.
 
This year Wake Forest will host its Arbor Day celebration and Tree Seedling Giveaway on Saturday at E. Carroll Joyner Park. During the expo, local organizations will offer special activities, treats, and information related to trees, gardening, and related topics.
 
Let's Shop Local - A Southern Shopping Spree comes to the NC State Fairgrounds Sunday featuring affordably priced jewelry, hand-painted scarves, soaps, lotions, unique crochet items, pottery and art all created by vendors who live within 30 miles of Raleigh.
 
Starting Wednesday and running through Sunday, area Kennel Clubs will be holding a Kennel Club Dog Show. Click through for the schedule.
 
Also at the Fairgrounds on Saturday will be the Children's Clothing and Baby Equipment Sale. Get some great deals on gently used items ranging from infants thru school age.
 
Thursday through Saturday, the Raleigh Spring Premier Benefit at the Hunt Horse Complex will feature classes for American Saddlebred horses, Roadster horses and ponies, Hackney ponies, Southeast riders and a full Morgan Division.
 
The Pet and Horse Expo will feature Top Clinicians, Education Seminars, World Class Shopping, and fun for the whole family to enjoy on both Saturday and Sunday at the Fairgrounds.
 
At the Museums
 
Bring your kids to the Art Museum Saturday for a special Family Fun Saturday all about Bold Lines and Shapes.

 

The 2008 Oscar-nominated film, Frost/Nixon starring Michael Sheen and Frank Langella in a dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon will be shown at the North Carolina Museum of History Sunday.
 
Birds of Paradise: Amazing Avian Evolution, the special exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will be closing Sunday. You can get BOGO tickets to the exhibit Thursday evening or squeeze in a visit this weekend. It is an amazing interactive display that the whole family will enjoy so if you haven't seen it yet, make sure you find the time this weekend.
 
Spring into a Park
 
Bring your kids to celebrate Durham's Creek Week by Playing in the Mud while exploring watersheds on Friday at Eno River State Park.

 

Come and learn about Occoneechee Mountain's Geologic Wonders and explore the pyrophyllite quarry with a real geologist on Saturday afternoon. Also Saturday, you are invited to take a hike to look at the early Signs of Spring found at Occoneechee.
 
Help keep Durant Nature Park clean by coming out to the annual Big Sweep Saturday.
 
Did you know that 2014 is the "Year of the Salamander?" Join Harris Lake County Park as they honor this cold weather-loving amphibian on a Salamander Search. There is both a morning and afternoon search.
 
Can't make it Saturday? Join in on a Salamander Search on Sunday along the American Tobacco Trail.
 
Sunday's Family Feature will teach the whole family what a habitat is and show you a few animals that call Crowder District County Park home. You will explore the enchanted side of the woods, build a fairy home and taste a magical snack.
 
Does the warm weather and sunshine inspire you to get out and do yard work? Sunday's Pruning Demonstration at Lake Crabtree County Park with the Master Gardeners of Wake County will teach you how to maintain the plants in your garden.
 
Join the Rangers at Falls Lake State Recreation Area Sunday for a program about the Birds of Prey that live around Falls Lake.
 
Come learn about the History of William B. Umstead State Park dating back in the mid 1930's Sunday at the park.
