We at ParkGeek.com are excited that in March we will celebrate nine years of serving the Triangle! It has been our passion and our purpose to share the awesome array of parks, museums and events available. You can help us get the word out. Sunday is Groundhog Day! Come to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences to witness Sir Walter Wally's prognosticating abilities and when we can expect Spring. Along with the shadow ceremony, there will be educational stations, games and activities.

Also in conjunction with Groundhog Day, the American Tobacco Trail is hosting Groundhogs on Thursday. You'll talk about the tradition of Groundhog Day and discover more about these interesting animals. Groggy Groundhogs is the Family Feature Saturday at Historic Yates Mill County Park.

This Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will focus on the Human Animal Bond.

Friday Kicks Off the Weekend

To open their new exhibit, In Search of a New Deal: Images of North Carolina, Historic Oak View Park will host a Lecture Event Friday night,. The exhibit which will run through June 8th explores the people of North Carolina during the Great Depression.

Wander the galleries with friends as you enjoy the extended hours and the movie On the Town during Art in the Evening at the North Carolina Museum of Art. While there, you are invited to enjoy a Friday Night Sound Bite that will focus on Taking It to the Limit.

Join American Tobacco Trail staff Friday night for a night under the stars. Starry Nights will explore the local night sky while you enjoy a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows.

Fun at the Parks

Lake Crabtree County Park invites you to join them for both Beginner Orienteering and Intermediate Orienteering on Saturday. Early Saturday morning, you can even go Birding with Vernon.

William B. Umstead State Park is hosting Can You Dig It? on Saturday. Come on out to the park and help with some trail maintenance.

Come out to Historic Yates Mill County Park Saturday morning to learn how to identify trees from their Bark and Buds.

They will be looking for Salamanders at Eno River State Park Saturday afternoon. Come back Sunday to do some Log Rolling. Monday afternoon they will be Talking Turkey.

Bundle up Saturday after dark to enjoy an Astronomy Viewing Session at Jordan Lake or Night Owls at Falls Lake.

Sunday's Winter Hike at West Point on the Eno Park will be along the remnants of the historic Fish Dam Road, an important trading path between two Indian villages-one on the Neuse River and one on the Eno.

On Tuesday, all ages are invited to Crowder District Park to learn all about Busy Beavers. You'll build a beaver dam, test your knowledge in a round of trivia and take home a fun beaver craft.

Art & Culture

Bring the whole family out to the North Carolina Museum of Art this weekend. If you are not familiar with the museum, you might want to take the Meet Your Museum Tour to get your bearings around the 164-acre campus or a Weekend Family Tour to explore Rembrandt's world on a kid friendly level. It also is the Final Weekend of their special exhibit Porsche by Design so there will be special prizes given away throughout the weekend.

Celebrating its 12th year, the Durham Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade rounds out the celebrations in the Triangle this Saturday. The family-oriented, multi-cultural event features floats, marching bands, steppers, horses, motorcycles, school groups and more.

People of all ages are invited to participate in the City of Raleigh's annual Paint Your heART Out!, a valentines inspired arts and scholarship support program. The hands-on painting event takes place at Sertoma Arts Center on Saturday.

Science Saturday is back at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences with the Early Earth Rock Record and the Search for Life on Other Planets. While you are there, check out the Wildlife in North Carolina Photographs on display through March.

Raleigh Theatre's Storytellers on the Go will present The Golden Doorstop on Saturday at the Halle Cultural Arts Center. The play tells the story of how our nations 1st gold mine was discovered by a 12 year old boy here in NC.

All 20 Wake County Libraries are participating in making Valentines for Veterans this year. They provide the materials and you provide the creativity and the gratitude to our Veterans. Teens can even earn Community Service hours for making Valentines for Veterans.

Historic Yates Mill County Park will host a Creative Art Session for kids 6-14 this Sunday in conjunction with the Mill as Muse Art Show. All artwork for the Mill as Muse Art Exhibit is due by 5pm Sunday. The Artists Reception will be next Saturday afternoon, February 8th.

The Holly Springs Cultural Center and the Holly Springs Arts Council have gotten together to host the second Community Arts Festival. Starting on Wednesday and running through Saturday.

Students across the country will join together for a virtual National Youth Summit that features civic engagement and the so-called Freedom Summer this Wednesday at noon. Students are invited to join the webcast at the North Carolina Museum of History.

The First Wednesday Flick at the Halle Cultural Arts Center will be Captain Phillips.

Fun at the Fairgrounds

Let's Shop Local - A Southern Shopping Spree comes to the State Fairgrounds this Saturday and will feature creative and small businesses from or near Raleigh.

Carolina Piedmont Dog Agility will sponsor Dog agility competitions Friday through Sunday.

Over 80 exhibitors will be buying, selling and trading vintage to new sportscards, memorabilia, NASCAR at this weekend's Sportscard and Sports Memorabilia 3-Day Show.
