Welcome to all the new ParkGeeks we met at Historic Oak View Park's Heritage Days. It was a great festival and the weather was incredible. The park has met their fundraising goal to restore the exterior of the newly acquired tenant house and is now selling raffle tickets for a beautiful quilt to raise money to renovate the interior. The tickets will be available at Oak View Park until the December 7th Sleigh Rides and Cider.

 

The fun starts Thursday around the Triangle. The Halle Cultural Arts Center invites you to bring the whole family out to a Family Dance. Learn fun dances with caller Connie Carringer as you dance to live, old-time, string band music.
 
Thursday culminates Power Week in Wake Forest with an Energy Fair. With both a daytime and evening edition, the Wake Forest Town Hall will be the scene of an energy savings and electric safety expo. The Wake Forest Power linemen will also offer electric safety demonstrations in Centennial Plaza.
 
This week's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will explore Plague: Old Disease, New Research.
 
Head over to the Raleigh State Farmers Market Thursday at lunchtime for the Great Pumpkin Contest. Pick up recipes, pick out your pumpkin, view the decorated pumpkins and gawk at the Giant pumpkins competing for the Largest Pumpkin Contest.
 
Brian Horton will be the featured artist for Thursday night's Art of Cool @ The Stack concert in Durham.
 
Halloween is Around the Corner
 
With only a few weeks until Halloween, there are plenty of spooky activities to get your little ghouls and goblins in the mood. With fun seasonal activities for little ones, family centered events and truly spooky haunted houses for the older crowd, there is most certainly something for everyone these next few weeks. Many of the following events do have admission fees or require reservations so click through for all the details. There will be even more Halloween activities next weekend, so if you are trying to plan ahead, just go to the Events search at www.ParkGeek. com, put in the dates and start planning!
Head on over to Harris Lake Park on Friday night for Creepy Caches. Discover the creepy side of geocaching aimed at everyone from beginners to experienced cachers.
Along with bats and black cats, wolves are another great Halloween animal. Head over to the NC Zoo for HOWL-O-Ween to learn the howls and tales of the Red Wolves.
 
Sunday kicks off Wolf Awareness Week at the Museum of Life & Science. Come learn about the very rare red wolf, native to North Carolina, of which there are only 300 alive in the world, with 190 in captivity.
Bring your pre-schoolers to Lake Johnson Park Tuesday morning for a Fall Harvest exploration of Pumpkins.
 
Fall Color is Coming

While October is a sensational time of year to just get in the car head over to a state or county park and go for a hike, there are some great guided hikes and special programs going on at the parks to make your Fall weekend that much more enjoyable!

Join the Occoneechee ranger Friday morning to see the mountain by canoe on a Fall Colors Canoe Trip.

Blue Jay Point County Park's Saturday Family Wildlife Series will be A Little Bit Squirrelly. Join staff to learn all about North Carolina"s state mammal.
 
Take an Astronomy Tour of the constellations with a Morehead Planetaruium educator including telescopic views of planets, nebulae, star clusters and the Moon Saturday night at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area
 
Antique & Craft Vendors, a Food Truck Pavilion, Nostalgic Hay Rides, Kids' Zone, Friendly Scarecrow Sightings and live music will all be apart of Saturday's Autumn Fest in Downtown Mebane.
 
Join one of the North Carolina Museum of History's garden staff Saturday afternoon for an informal tour of the History of the Harvest garden exhibit in Bicentennial Plaza and see what's going on this time of year in the garden!
 
Pullen Park's Discovery Days is a new series aimed at pre-school and elementary aged children. This Saturday's edition will explore Reptiles. Tuesday's edition will teach kids All About Hawks.
 
Bring the whole family out to Durant Nature Park Saturday for a fun-filled program celebrating Family Tree Day.
 
The Annual Chili Cook Off will take place at Saturday's Farmers' Market in Downtown Holly Springs. Come cast your vote for the amatuer and professional categories while you enjoy live music and fun for the entire family.
 
Join them Sunday at the Sarah P Duke Gardens for a Fall Festival in the Discovery Garden with activities for the entire family including kids activities, information stations, displays, a salsa tasting contest and sack races.
 
Meet Crowder District Park staff Sunday afternoon on the boardwalk to study the Beavers that once called the park home.
 
Join avian expert, John Gerwin, to learn how to observe and identify Wetland Birds at Walnut Creek Wetland Center Tuesday morning.
 
Music, Movies & Porsches
 
Friday night features a variety of programs at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Art in the Evening brings extended hours and live music with David Dyer and the Crooked Smile Band. The Gallery Tour will be the Docent's Choice. You can also join ceramic artist Gillian Parke for a Lecture about the art form of stein making. Enjoy a pint of beer from the tap in the Porsche Biergarten while learning about steins in history. The 1968 film, Bullitt will be part of the Car Crazy film series Friday night.

 

Come back to the North Carolina Museum of Art Saturday to celebrate the opening of their new exhibit Porsche by Design with a Porsche Drop-In Studio with hands-on activities for kids of all ages. On four Saturdays during Porsche by Design, the Museum presents juried car shows along Blue Ridge Road. The Porsche Meetup will also boast music, food trucks with breakfast and snacks for sale, a kids play zone, and health screenings.
 
The Pastel Society of North Carolina invites you to the Opening Reception of their Art Exhibit Friday night at the Halle Cultural Arts Center. Also in Apex, Nora Jane Struther & The Party Line will be playing a concert at the Historic Train Depot.
 
It's the second Friday of the month so it's time for Art After Hours in Downtown Wake Forest.
 
Come on out to Bass Lake Park Friday night for some Family Bingo.
The Holly Springs Cultural Center will feature Madagascar Escape to Africa for their Saturday morning family movie.
 
The Downtown Performers Series Saturday night in Cary will feature Clean comedian, John Floyd.
 
Zingaresca, a duo who perform music for the Russian seven-string guitar, will be delighting an audience Sunday afternoon at the North Carolina Museum of History.
 
Events at the Museums
 
Saturday is Chemistry Day at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences! This year's theme is Energy: Now and Forever. Visitors can learn about sustainable energy, biofuels and many other chemistry-related research topics.

 

Stay at the Museum of Natural Sciences as the sun goes down to enjoy International Observe the Moon Night. Hear short presentations from a panel of experts to start the evening then join Museum astronomers and members of the Raleigh Astronomy Club to view the Moon via telescopes from the top (9th) floor of the adjacent parking deck.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will host the inaugural STEM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities on Wednesday morning. Students with developmental and/or physical disabilities, grades 3-12, will have the opportunity to interact with college students and professionals with a variety of disabilities who have forged successful career paths in STEM fields.
 
Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park will offer Saturday at the Old Mill Tours and Mill Heritage & Local History Tours on Sunday.
 
Historic Preservation Society of Durham docents invite you to join them for a Tobacco Heritage Walking Tour.
