Welcome back to the heat of the summer. There are lots of great summer events this weekend.

 
Monday, July 21st through Saturday, July 27th is Military Appreciation Week at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Although admission to the museum is always free, the week will offer all active, reserve or retired military and their families discounted tickets to Dinosaurs in Motion, discounted store merchandise & Museum memberships, and a variety of special presentations.
 
Celebrate Summer at a Park
 
Even if you are already back in school, a trip to a local park can be an awesome way to unwind and rejuvenate yourself. Eno River State Park invites you to join them Saturday for Skins & Skulls, Beginning Fishing, River Explorers, and Animal Grossology. Come back Sunday to go Fishing With The Naturalist or another edition of River Explorers. Bring the kids to Eno on Wednesday to Build a Boat with recycled materials.

 

On the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays through the summer, Lake Crabtree Park invites you to bring the family out for an evening of Fishing. Bring your own pole or borrow one of theirs. They'll teach you the basics of fishing and even supply the bait. Also at Lake Crabtree, you can take either Beginner Orienteering or Intermediate Orienteering on Saturday. Be a student in Fish School on Sunday to not only learn how to catch a fish, but also how to identify it.
 
Join a costumed interpreter both Saturday and Sunday at Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park to learn how the mill works on a Grinding Tour.. They will delve into the History of Ice Manufacturing Saturday afternoon with a free family program that will even include some ice bowling.
 
Historic Preservation Society of Durham docents will lead a Durham Civil Rights Legacy Walking Tour focusing on sites in downtown Durham that were important in the 1950s and "60s Civil Rights movement on Saturday morning.
Join a member of the North Carolina Museum of History garden staff for an informal tour of the Garden exhibit lining Bicentennial Plaza.
 
Crowder District County Park invites the family to check out the Sun's Power while you use it to cook a snack and make an art project Sunday afternoon.
Be a part of another Citizen Science Saturday at Prairie Ridge Ecostation for Wildlife Learning.
 
The US Army Corps of Engineers Rangers will be at Falls Lake State Recreation Area Saturday to have some fun while learning about one of the best water safety tools around: Life Jackets.
 
Join the Occoneechee Ranger on Saturday to take a hike and learn the Seven Species of Oaks that grow in the park and their historic/present uses.
Join a park ranger at William B. Umstead State Park on Sunday afternoon to make a Hiking Stick and then go on a short hike.

Tunes & Culture

Jonathan Byrd brings his Americana tunes to the CCB Plaza Thursday night.

The Halle Cultural Center will be hosting an Opening Reception for the Watercolor Society of North Carolina Friday night highlighting the work of artist Erin Dittrich. Also Friday night, Dance Caller Connie Carringer will be teaching fun dances to live music at this month's Family Dance.
 
Sidecar Social Club will be playing the tunes Friday night at Art in the Evening. The Sound Bites will explore The Impressionist Portrait at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
 
Mudbones Blues will be the featured band at Friday night's Warehouse Blues Concert at Durham Central Park.
 
Join the Taste of Blount Street and City Market in Moore Square on Saturday for a fun-filled family day with cultural diversity that includes foods, beers & wines, dance & music. Click through for a list of participating restaurants.
 
This week's Sunday in the Park Concert will be hosted by Pullen Park and will highlight local singer/songwriter Brooke Hatala.

Movies

Escape From Planet Earth will be the featured family flick along with pizza Thursday night at the Halle Cultural Arts Center.

The Locally Grown Movie in downtown Chapel Hill will be the 2000 film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? on Thursday night. Movie nights provide entertainment for the whole family with free popcorn, crafts, activities, trivia & costume contests, and more!
 
The Friday night Outdoor Film Series at the North Carolina Museum of Art will be the 2012 film, Silver Lining Playbook starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver. Come back Saturday after dark for the Oscar winning film, Argo.
 
Want a date night? Drop the kids off at Walnut Creek Wetland Center Friday night where its Kid's Nature Night. They will enjoy learning about nature, a short hike, games, crafts and a related movie!
 
Full Frame's Third Friday film series continues at the American Tobacco Campus with the killer whale documentary, Blackfish.
 
Pack a picnic and enjoy Friday night's Movies By Moonlight at Regency Park. This week features the family favorite, Wreck it Ralph.
Durham Central Park will host a Film Screening of Knight and Day Saturday night.
Discover the dreams, talents, and personalities that make the characters from these five award-winning films special during Wednesday's Summer Family Film Series at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Come enjoy the Drop in Studio, browse the galleries and the enjoy five film shorts.

Fun at the Museums & Fairgrounds
 
As the temperatures heat up, the Museum of Life & Science invites you to their Deep Freeze. Chill out with a misty journey through a miniature city made from bricks of dry ice, cool off with a cup of liquid nitrogen ice cream, and paint with giant blocks of ice. The icy fun starts Thursday and continues through Saturday.

 

This Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will take on the journey from Cow to Cone with some Ice Cream Science.
 
You're invited to bring up to three objects to the North Carolina Museum of History on Friday for assessment and advice on care from their Conservators.
The North Carolina State Fairgrounds will be hosting the Raleigh Coin Club & Stamp Show which offers free admission.
 
The Raleigh Antiques Extravaganza and Repticon Reptile & Exotic Animal Show also take place this weekend, but do have admission fees.
 
The Double L Bar Cowboy Mounted Shooters July Shoot'm UP comes to the State Fairgrounds this weekend. There is an admission price for adults, but kids under 10are free.
