Wonderful Summer weather lends itself to having fun with friends and family. With such an amazing variety of events going on this weekend, from movies and concerts to hikes and history programs, I hope you can find something to do to make this weekend part of your summer to remember.

The Farmers Markets are in full swing now. Just about every town in the Triangle has its own Farmer's Market Saturday morning and several have weekday times, too. Go to the Event Search at Parkgeek.com and plug in Farmer's Market and we will give you all the details so you can bring home some local honey or some just picked tomatoes. Head on over to the State Farmers Market in Raleigh on Thursday at lunchtime for Peach Day.

 
The LoMo Mobile Market is at the American Tobacco Campus every Wednesday afternoon at lunchtime.
 
Next Wednesday is the Tomatolicious Festival and Wellness Wednesday at the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market. The tomato-centric event features an heirloom tomato tasting, great local food, raffles, giveaways, recipes and tips, kid's activities, and musical performance by local singer-songwriter Russ Thompson.
 
The State Fair is still several months away, but there will be a Gem & Jewelry Show at the State Fairgrounds this weekend along with the Horse Show.
 
This week is also Target $2 Tuesday Night at Marbles Kids Museum. Extended hours and discounted admission make Marbles a great destination for a summer evening.
 
Looking for a fun thing to do midweek with the kids? The North Carolina Museum of Art invites you to check out their Wednesday Family Films and Drop in Studio. Each week is a different theme and this week will be all about Action Adventures.
 
Our local museums are holding some fun events. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences invites kids 2 to 18 to get creative with their Dinosaur Illustration Contest. They will be accepting drawings through August 15th.
 
July is Blue Morpho Month at the Museum of Life and Science. This month they plan to release a thousand new Blue Morpho butterflies! Come enjoy the daily butterfly releases which will create a total immersion experience and Chat with their team of entomologists.
 
History Comes Alive for Second Saturday

This weekend marks Second Saturday at all 37 of North Carolina's Historic Sites. There are free activities throughout the state and several right here in the Triangle.

At Bennett Place Historic Site they will remembering the Battle of Gettysburg, 150th Anniversary. They will commemorate the most defining battle of the American Civil War with lectures on the generals, the soldiers, and the regiments.

Food and art are the themes of the day at the Duke Homestead Historic Site. The Pork Peanuts & Pickles festival will include a barbecue cook-off and juried competition for homemade pies. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy historical cooking demonstrations as well as art and craft vendors throughout the site.
 
Potter Bob Meier will demonstrate the art of turning clay on a wheel as he makes examples of contemporary pottery at the North Carolina Museum of History. Not only can you watch the artist at work, but you can also work a little clay yourself during a Make it, Take it program.
 
The theme for Bentonville State Historic Site is Made in the Shade: Summertime Fun at Bentonville. Enjoy a day of fun & crafts as you make corn husk dolls, plant seeds and play with toys of the period. There will even be craft vendors on site exhibiting and selling their handmade goods.
 
The North Carolina State Capitol will be holding a Photography Workshop.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art will hold a Family Fun Saturday that explores the Portraits in Your Pocket (on money).
 
For a day trips outside the Triangle, Fort Fisher State Recreation Area will be exploring what's Hidden Beneath the Sand. Explore the history of Fort Fisher through the archaeological record found both on land and in our local waterways.
 
Tryon Palace will celebrate with special historic cooking demonstrations, tastings, tours and activities. Free activities include free garden admission, colonial games in the Palace courtyard, colonial chocolate making demonstration and tasting, and an interactive historic ice cream demonstration and tasting.
 
The Battleship North Carolina invites visitors to take Battleship 101. Volunteers stationed throughout the ship engage visitors in specific subjects and areas including: gunnery, radar, sick bay, galley, engineering, and daily shipboard life. The Legacy Series also continues in July as area submarine veterans will bring "show and tell items" and video to engage visitors about the Submarine USS NORTH CAROLINA.
 
Come check out Wake County's only remaining mill and explore the inner workings of the mill itself as you witness the power of water as it turns the milling machinery during a Saturday at the Old Mill Tour on Saturday or a Mill Heritage & Local History Tour on Sunday at Yates Mill County Park.
 
The Holly Springs Cultural Center invites you to participate in a Polynesian Dance Demo while you learn about the differences between Hawai'i hula and Tahiti's o'tea.

Music to Fill the Air
 
Start your weekend off Thursday night will another Oak City 7 Concert in Downtown Raleigh. This week's line up includes Yarn, Chit Nasty Band, Suitcase, and Curtis Eller!

 

Cyril Lance Collective Arkestra will be playing Blues Thursday night at the CCB Plaza's "Find Your Cool" Summer Concert.
 
Jo Gore & the Alternative will be playing Friday's Warehouse Blues Concert at Durham Central Park.
 
The Fuquay-Varina Arts Council presents their monthly Art After Dark in downtown Fuquay-Varina. Enjoy live music, local artwork, an Artist and Crafter's Market, and a variety of creative events featuring the Arts in various forms.
 
On the second Friday night of each month the streets of Downtown Wake Forest come alive with food, merchants and music for Art After Hours.
 
The Trophy Husbands, one of the region"s best known party bands will be at the Holly Springs Cultural Center Friday night.
 
Ed Stephenson and the Paco Band will be playing for Art in the Evening at the North Carolina Museum of Art. You can also join a Museum docent for a casual, in-depth exploration of The Language of Light.
 
Ricardo Diquez and the Tropic Orchestra will be playing a Starlight Concert at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center Friday evening.
 
The Brian Horton Quartet will be in Concert at the Bond Park Community Center Saturday evening.
 
Head on over to the Historic Train Depot in Downtown Apex Saturday evening for a concert by the Kickin" Grass Band.
 
This week's Sunday in the Park Concert will feature the Raleigh Jazz Orchestra at Fred Fletcher Park.

Movies & Museums
 
This Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences takes a new twist with a Family Edition of the Scavenger Hunt Challenge.

 

The 1984 classic, Ghostbusters will be the Locally Grown Movie Thursday night in Chapel Hill.
 
The Holly Springs Cultural Center invites you to the Opening Reception for their Open Studio Show. The Thursday night event will kick off a month long exhibit of five local artists.
 
Steel Magnolias, the 1989 chick flick starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts will be on the big screen Friday night at Regency Park.
 
Holly Springs Cultural Center will be showing Planet 51 Saturday Morning.
 
Friday night at Bass Lake Park you are invited to bring the whole family for some Family Bingo.

Fun at the Parks
 
Join a Umstead State Park park ranger to talk Streams Thursday afternoon. You will discuss how they form and age as well as the life they support. There will be a short hike to Pott's Branch. Young adults (ages 16-20) will be introduced to Canoeing Thursday morning. Bring your kids to Umstead Saturday so they can learn about the Junior Ranger Program.

 

Want to help out your community park? Consider volunteering at Crowder District Park for this week's Service Saturday. Come back Sunday for a Family Pond Study and have some Froggy Fun.
 
They will be teaching all about Delightful Decomposers Sunday afternoon on the American Tobacco Trail.
