All the warm weather and sunshine sure make it feel like summer is here! Along with summer in the Triangle comes a wonderful assortment of outdoor concerts and summer movies on the lawn. Grab a blanket and some snacks and enjoy the season!
This week we have listed almost 80 events! We will highlight some of the exciting events, but for the whole list of everything going on throughout the Triangle, make sure you go to the ParkGeek.com event search. Put in this weekend's dates and start planning a fabulous weekend.
Raleigh's concert series, Oak City 7 returns this Thursday in City Plaza. Admission is free, will feature three bands each date and the concerts will take place every other Thursday through August. This week's concert will feature Orquesta GarDel, Old Quarter, Erin Nenni Band and Peak City Blues.
Fabulous Festivals
Celebrate Fuquay-Varina will be heating things up this weekend. The festival kicks off Thursday night with a concert by Spare Change and then all day Saturday with live music, arts & crafts, free children"s rides, a BMX Stunt Show, antique cars and tractors, concessions, eating contests, a Community Showcase and the En Plein Air Auction.
The Dog Days of June come to Bond Park with plenty to do for you and your four legged friend. There will be Family Events including live music, a charity dog walk, a dog/owner look-alike contest, raffles and lots of pet related businesses. You can also team up with your dog and compete in the Dog Disc Competition! All dogs and experience levels are welcome and it should be a blast for spectators, too. Dog Days is all about keeping your pet healthy and happy. The event will also include a Dog Wash, Rabies Vaccine and Micro-chipping Clinic.
Duke Park will host the Annual Beaver Queen Pageant. The family friendly Beaver Drag fundraising event supports the Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association in its effort to clean the beaver's wetland.
This weekend brings the Latino Arts Festival to Apex. The festivities start Saturday afternoon with arts & crafts, a Bazaar and pinatas and continue Saturday evening with Latino food, music and dancing.
It's an old-fashioned Birthday Party to celebrate the anniversary of Kids Together Park. Come join in on the festivities including a parade, The Kids Together Story and Roly Poly fruit slushies.
Come celebrate the goats' 8th birthday at Historic Oak View Park's Barnyard Birthday Bash Saturday morning. Enjoy games and activities, eat some cake, and of course, sing "Happy Birthday" to Boyd and Quint!
Celebrate the Re-Opening of Around Town featuring the brand new 'On the Farm' exhibit. Enjoy a day of NC farm fun for the whole family Saturday at Marbles Kids Museum.
Music at the Parks & Museums
The Burwell School kicks off their summer series Friday night with Ironing Board Sam. Join them on the front lawn to enjoy an evening of classic blues and R&B tunes.
The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra will be playing its blend of bluegrass folk and progressive rock/jazz fusion/world music at the Historic Old Courthouse in downtown Hillsborough Friday night as this month's Last Friday Concert.
Peter Lamb and the Wolves will be playing the tunes for Friday night's Art in the Evening along with a Sound Bite about The Four Seasons at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
Everyone will enjoy Friday's Old North State Brass Band Concert featuring a wide variety of music ranging from marches, show tunes, big band swing and ragtime at the Sertoma Amphitheater Friday night.
This week's Sunday in the Park Concert will feature Folk, rock, country and Americana music with the band Milagro Saints at Fred Fletcher Park.
This week's Six Sundays in Spring Concert at Joyner Park delivers the old-time string band, Big Medicine.
Science & History Come Alive
The Legacy of Freedom Symposium is a free two-day symposium that will examine President Abraham Lincoln's reasons for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation Friday and Saturday.
Science Saturdays is a series of lectures and demonstrations that are held on the first Saturday of each month at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. This month's event will focus on Carolina Bays in Southeastern North Carolina.
Explore Historical Maps from UNC-Chapel Hill's Special Collection, make your own map of the mill pond, and then put your newfound knowledge to the test with an orienteering challenge Saturday afternoon at Historic Yates Mill County Park. While you are there Saturday, take a Half Hour Tour of the Mill. You can also tale a Mill Heritage & Local History Tour on Sunday.
The Executive Director of the Burwell School Historic Site will offer a lecture on Elizabeth Keckly and her extraordinary journey from enslavement in Hillsborough through her time in the Lincoln White House as confidante and dressmaker of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln on Saturday at the Dickerson Chapel AME Church.
National Trail Day
This weekend as we celebrate National Trails Day, there are numerous projects around the Triangle that you are invited to join in on and some special programs and hikes. What a great opportunity to give back to our parks! Some of the events do require registration or request you bring or wear special equipment, so make sure you click through for all the information.
Blue Jay Point County Park and REI invite you to join them working on the trails. They will have family-friendly mulching projects for kids as well.
They will be constructing hiking trail along the Eno River between West Point on the Eno and Penny's Bend. They will be meeting at River Forest Park and are looking for eager volunteers.
Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail invite you to join them to perform trail maintenace on 60 miles of the MST at Falls Lake.
Come celebrate National Trails Day and 70 miles of greenways in the Town of Cary with a 7 mile training run on the Black Creek Greenway.
Join in the 21st anniversary of America's largest trail celebration. Park staff at Little River Regional Park will lead an interpretive hike along portions of the Ridge, North River Loop, and Homestead Trails. Learn about the historical features along the trails as well as some of the flora and fauna found in the park.
