Happy Memorial Day Weekend! May your weekend be full of fun, relaxation and cookouts! Remember, if you are looking for a great park to play at this weekend, go to ParkGeek.com, click on Parks and check off the activities or amenities you are looking for. Memorial Day Observations


Memorial Day is about remembering and honoring those who served our nation. There will be a wonderful event on Monday keeping the meaning of the Holiday in mind. The Tar Heel Detachment of the Marine Corps League for the greater Raleigh area, will sponsor a Memorial Day Ceremony at the State Capitol grounds.

On Saturday & Sunday, Bennett Place will also honor our fallen soldiers. They will host a living history event with re-enactors portraying American Soldiers through the Ages.
 

Join Marbles Kids Museum on Monday for a Star-Spangled Dance Party, Fireworks Painting, Rocket Science and more.

Fun at the Parks
 
Start the weekend early with a peaceful hour of Fishing on Big Lake Thursday evening at Umstead State Park. Come back Saturday to Look for Lizards.

 

They will be going on a Bug Hunt Thursday afternoon on the American Tobacco Trail.
 
Join an Arborist on a stroll through the Walnut Creek Wetland Friday evening to learn to identify Wetland Trees.
 
Want to stay flexible? Crowder District Park will be hosting a Family Pond Study Saturday afternoon. Prairie Ridge Ecostation also invites you to join them Saturday for their weekly Citizen Science Walk. Neither program requires preregistration and both are free. Saturday's Photography for Science is also free, but does require registration.
 
Come out to Yates Mill Pond Saturday for a morning Canoe Float or an afternoon of Family Fishing Fun. The Historic County Park will also be offering Saturdays at the Old Mill Tours. As a special treat, they will offer Mill Heritage & Local History Tours on Monday.
 
Kids ages 5-15 are invited to come to Eno River State Park Saturday morning to learn all about Beginning Fishing. Looking to get into shape for the summer? Join a Naturalist both Saturday and Sunday for a 4 mile Power Hike or do some leisurely Birdwatching early Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon, rangers will be talking about Creatures of the Night. 4 & 5 year olds are invited to try their hand at Jr. Beginning Fishing Sunday along with a program about Moles & Voles.
 
Saturday's Family Wildlife Series at Blue Jay Point County Park will allow you to explore their gardens and learn how to preserve your memories by making a flower press.
 
Explore the Pyrophyllite Quarry with a real geologist on Saturday at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area.
 
Learn all about local Turtles and search for them in their natural habitat Sunday afternoon at Lake Crabtree County Park.
 
The State Fairgrounds will host a Bird Fair, an Equestrian Exchange Consignment Sale and a Regional Morgan Horse Show this weekend.
 
Are you looking to be a little more spontaneous? Pre-registration not really your thing? The Triangle has several beautiful lakes that offer boat rentals so you can enjoy the serenity of the water at your own pace. Bass Lake Park, Bond Park, Lake Benson, Lake Crabtree Park, Lake Johnson Park, Umstead State Park and Lake Wheeler all offer seasonal boat rental and they are all open for business this weekend!

Ligers and tigons and bears, Oh My! This Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will take on Animal Hybrids.

 

The "Find Your Cool" Summer Concert Series continues Thursday evening at CCB Plaza with the Rockabilly sounds of Sarah Shook & The Devil.
 
Art of Cool @ The Stack will feature the sounds of Lila this Thursday night.
 
Art in the Evening kicks off the holiday weekend at the North Carolina Museum of Art with live music by the the Hey Brothers and Modern Devotion, a Friday Night Sound Bite about representations of the divine.
 
Celebrate Yankovic Day in Cary Friday evening and keep the spirit of his polka music alive.
 
The Lockdown Blues Band will be playing an outdoor concert at the Holly Springs Cultural Center Friday night. Come back Saturday morning to see a free Clown Show with Calvin Klown and the movie Ratatouille.
 
The Six Sundays in Spring Concert Series continues this weekend at Carroll Joyner Park with Ghezzi.
 
Last Call will be playing classic rock Sunday night for the first Sunday in the Park Concert at Pullen Park. The Sunday evening concerts will flip between Pullen Park and Fletcher Park.
 
The Preservation Speaker Series: "What Have We Got to Lose? An Annual Inventory and Report to the Community on the Status of Historic Treasures In and Around Cary" will take place Tuesday night at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center.
 
This Wednesday's Hob Nob Jazz Series Concert at Regency Park will feature the band Outside Soul.
 
Holiday Weekend in Wilmington
 
If you are one of the lucky ones heading east to the coast, we wanted to let you know about some fun stuff going on this weekend in the Wilmington Area. The Battleship North Carolina will be hosting the Annual Memorial Day Observance. Remember those who gave their lives in service and honor veterans at a traditional Memorial Day Observance featuring a military guest speaker, an all-service Color Guard, a 21-gun salute by a Marine Corps Honor Guard, military band, Taps, and a memorial wreath cast onto the waters.

 

Wilmington's largest downtown arts festival returns this Memorial Day weekend. The Orange Street Arts Festival boasts the work of more than 55 artists, live entertainment and a food, beer, and wine tent.
 
Carolina Beach kicks off the season with a concert and Fireworks by the Sea. Local band, the Drew Smith Band will be playing Friday night followed by a fabulous fireworks display. Sunday starts their movie season with Wreck it Ralph. Click through for the entire season of outdoor flicks.
The Steady Eddies will give a Boogie in the Park concert Sunday afternoon featuring the greatest hits of classic rock at Kure Beach.
 
While you are in the Wilmington area, you may want to check out the Fort Fisher Aquarium. Membership to the three North Carolina Aquariums and the North Carolina Zoo are reciprocal. Our favorite is Luna, the albino alligator.
