Happy Valentines Day! Have a wonderful day with your special people on Thursday and then get ready for a jam packed weekend full of festivals, history, art and birdwatching.
 

Saturday is Darwin Day at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The annual event celebrates Charles Darwin, his theory of natural selection and his impact on modern scientific research today. Come enjoy lots of great hands on science with area researchers and universities.

 
Friday through Monday is the Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. See below for all the details, but there are lots of fun opportunities to contribute to the count and learn all about our local feathered friends.

 

 

Art, Music & History this Weekend

Friday night at the NC Museum of Art makes a great date night with Friday Night Sound Bites that focus on images and symbols of love that have stood the test of time. Sidecar Social Club will provide live music for Art in the Evening and the 1956 classic Written on the Wind starring Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall will be this week's NCMA Cinema feature. Bring the kids back Saturday for a love themed Family Fun Saturday. Caroline Weber will offer a lecture on Centuries of Hair (and Other Extremities) Sunday at the Art Museum.

 

The Cary Town Band will celebrate Valentines Day and Girls in Music with their mid-Winter concert on Friday night at the Cary Arts Center. Come back to the Cary Arts Center on Saturday for Creative Fire: An African-American Celebration of the Arts. The event will feature Dub Addis and La'Ney West African Dance & Percussion as well as a craft and nonprofit fair and children's activities.
 
The Halle Cultural Arts Center invite you to the Opening Reception for their Youth Juried Show on Friday night. The Art work created by kids 4-18 will be on display through March 15th.
 
Soul Souvenirs, the story of soul, funk and R&B music in Durham in the 1960's & 1970's is an exhibit on display at the American Tobacco Campus through April.
 
The Burwell School Historic Site is proud to present a new temporary exhibit entitled Mrs. Burwell's Garden. The exhibit showcases the importance of the kitchen, herb, and flower gardens in 19th century America and to Mrs. Burwell during her life in Hillsborough over 180 years ago.
 
This Saturday is the annual Revolutionary War Living History Day at the Alexander Dickson House. Events include marching drills, musket-firing demonstrations and open-flame cooking. They will also offer Guided Tours showcasing Hillsborough's revolutionary and colonial era sites for a small fee.
 
Come celebrate Black History Month aboard the Raleigh Trolley. This special event will take participants through Downtown Raleigh on a historic trolley tour highlighting the city's African American heritage.
 
The North Carolina Museum of History is also celebrating Black History Month Saturday with Hands on History, a drop in opportunity to learn about African Americans who have called North Carolina home while you make craft, jump a rope or hear a story. Sunday at the History Museum you are welcome to join them for the 1989 movie Glory followed by a discussion.
 
Cars will be the family flick Saturday morning at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.
 
Tuesday brings Tuesday Morning Movies at the Halle Cultural Arts Center, Target $2 Tuesday Night at Marbles Kids Museum and a Red Cross Blood Drive at the American Tobacco Campus.

The State Fairgrounds offers Fun Indoor Activities

Bring your Valentine to the State Fairgrounds this weekend. Starting Thursday and running all weekend, the NC International Auto Expo will highlight new production models and concept cars with car, truck and sports utility vehicle manufacturers on display. Special attractions include Family Fun with Spiderman, the Gieco geco, Sherrif & Highway Patrol Cars and a Race Car Display.

Come see up to 225 cats in competition at the Mid Atlantic Persian & Himalayan Fanciers CFA Cat Show. There will be two different shows, one Saturday and one Sunday along with vendors with items for you, your cats, and your cat loving friends.

 
The Raleigh Winter II Hunter Show will take place at the Hunt Horse Complex all weekend. The indoor hunter jumper horse show is a must see for any horse lovers.
 
Over 100 vendors featuring Lionel, K-Line, MTH, American Flyer, "N", "HO", "O", "S". and "G" gauge trains, accessories, track, switches and hard to find parts will be on display Sunday for the Toy Train Sale and Swap Meet.

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC)

This weekend celebrates the Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. A national four day event that encourages bird watchers to count birds and report their results online to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Bird Count is a featured event at several parks around the Triangle. Some of the events do require registration so click through for all the details.

Start off the weekend with Intro to Bird Watching and the GBBC on Friday afternoon at Harris Lake Park. Saturday's Birdapalooza will feature games, crafts, hikes, scavenger hunt and more while you sip a cup of shade-grown coffee or hot chocolate! Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings you can come join in on a Public Bird Count Walk. On Sunday at Harris Lake, you can also take a Waterfowl hike along the shoreline and an Evening Stroll Through the Park. All of the GBBC events at Harris Lake this weekend are free and do not require registration.

Crowder District Park invites you to join them for a Winter Owl Prowl Friday night, a Breakfast with the Birds Hike and On the Trail of Blue Birds both on Saturday. Sunday afternoon, you can either take a one-mile hike around Crowder's Pond while you learn how to Identify Backyard Birds by sight and sound or learn how to do Gardening for Birds.
 
Historic Yates Mill County Park also welcomes you to join in with a Walkabout the Pond Bird Count Friday afternoon. Beach-y Birds on both Saturday and Sunday will feature a special screening of the award-winning children's nature film, Gus Outdoors: Gull Island. Come back Saturday night for a Birds of the Night Hike, Sunday's fun includes Breakfast with the Birds and the Count finishes up Monday with A Side of History: National Birds.
 
Lake Crabtree County Park is hosting Bird Count Walks each morning and afternoon Friday through Monday and a Bird Expo on Saturday and Sunday.
 
Meet up with other birders Saturday for an Early Morning Walk along the American Tobacco Trail. Listen for bird calls, and exchange notes with other "birders".
 
Stop by Prairie Ridge Ecostation anytime during their public hours and participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. They will have simple instructions, bird checklists, and free bird feeders to make and take home with you.
 
Gather at Kids Together Playground at Marla Dorrel Park to Count the Birds Saturday as you identify birds by species and record the number of each that you see. Then enjoy refreshments as they tally the results.
 
Durant Nature Park will hold a Birding Bonanza on Sunday afternoon that will include an opportunity to become a citizen scientist counting birds in our area, guided bird hikes and family friendly activities like bird feeder making, homemade field guides, bird games and bird crafts!
 
Little River Regional Park invites you to come to the park to pick up instructions, field guides and data sheets from the Park office and then spend a few minutes counting. Come back Monday to be entertained as a costumed nature instructor introduces you to the fascinating world of Vultures.
 
White Deer Park also invites you to swing by their Nature Center to pick up your checklist and learn how the Great Backyard Bird Count works.
 
My Yard is Full of Birds is the theme of Monday morning's Family Wildlife Series program at Blue Jay County Park. Come hear a bird story, try a fun bird activity and count how many different kinds of birds you can see from Blue Jay's front porch as the Great Backyard Bird Count winds down.
 

More Fun at the Parks

Friday and Saturday are Nature Play Days at Wilkerson Nature Preserve! Come to the park to enjoy their latest ideas for playing in nature.

Come to the Walnut Creek Wetland Center Friday afternoon and meet Cleopatra, an Eastern Kingsnake and The Colonel, a Corn Snake during Snakes at Walnut Creek.
 
There is a Trail Workday at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area on Friday and a Mountain Bike Workday at Harris Lake County Park on Saturday.
 
Come on out to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area Saturday after dark to enjoy an Astronomy Viewing Session with Morehead Planetarium educators.
 
The King Family once owned more than 300 acres of land in the area that is now William B. Umstead park. Join a Park Ranger Saturday morning as you explore the old home site. On Sunday you can learn how to do Winter Tree ID. An Eno River State Park Ranger will also be exploring the history of the park on a hike out to the Anthony Cole Homestead Sunday afternoon.
 
Several Citizen Science Projects now have Smartphone Apps that allow you to make quick and easy observations that are incredibly valuable to scientists. Bring your smartphone to Prairie Ridge Ecostation Saturday and prepare for a leisurely walk outside.
