We hope you had a fabulous New Year! Whether you are ready to get out and get active in 2013 or you are looking for somewhere to unwind from the holidays, we have some great events this weekend.

The fun starts Thursday night at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. If you haven't been to one of their weekly Science Cafes, your missing a lot of fun. Hosted by the Museum's Daily Planet Café, this week's Science Cafe will feature a competitive evening of Science Trivia. Along with the Cafe, there are also extended hours throughout the museum and discounted tickets to the Titanic Exhibit.

 
First Friday and More!
 
First Friday is back at the The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences with the film Five Million Years to Earth. The 1967 film is one of three films based on Nigel Kneale"s "Quatermass" British sci-fi TV series. The evening also includes extended gallery hours, discounted tickets to the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, a Teen Science Cafe and a a special showing of the Mountains to the Sea Quilt by the Durham Orange Art Quilt Bee.

 

Both the Raleigh City Museum and Marbles Kids Museum invites you to enjoy First Friday extended hours in addition to special activities. Marbles is hosting Innovate: Look Out Below and a First Friday Savings Spree. The Downtown restaurants and galleries join in, too with a Gallery Walk.
 
Bundle up and head to Downtown Raleigh to the Winterfest Ice Rink. Admission including skate rental is $8.00 for both adults and children. The rink features Sledding Sundays, Two for Tuesdays, Workout Wednesdays, Date & Skate Thursdays and Rock Around the Rink Fridays with DJ Paradime from Pulse 102.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art ushers is the weekend with an in-depth exploration of And the Party Still Goes on... with a Museum docent Friday night. Bring the whole family for a Meet Your Museum Tour on Saturday afternoon and enjoy an official introduction to the 164 acre campus that the NC Museum of Art encompasses.
 
Getting Some Fresh Air
 
The darkest days of winter have passed and it's time to celebrate! Come eat, drink, and be merry at Yates Mill's Twelfth Night Celebration. Participate in traditional crafts and festivities and taste a Twelfth Night cake.

 

Eno River State Park invites you to learn about Water Management while you take a hike Friday afternoon. Come back to the park Saturday to join a park ranger to see two of the historic home sites still standing at Fews Ford. Sunday afternoon's Holden's Mill Hike will take you on a walk back in history as you learn about the park's mills.
 
Learn how to better use your camera and learn how to take better nature photographs during Nature Photography and Camera Basics at Raven Rock State Park Saturday morning.
 
Its the beginning of the month so you are invited to go Birding with Vernon at Lake Crabtree County Park early Saturday morning.
 
Kids ages 8-15 are welcome to join them at Walnut Creek Wetland Center Saturday morning to learn all about Wetland Birds.
 
Tuesday morning, you can Walk Through the Seasons at Prairie Ridge Ecostation. The leisurely 1-mile walk with a Museum naturalist will allow you to explore the always changing landscape.
 
If getting in shape was one of your resolutions, come on over to William B. Umstead State Park on Tuesday to Run With A Ranger. Come prepared to run approximately 5 miles.
 
They need your help on Wednesday to take an Eagle Count at Lake Crabtree County Park. You will even get to enjoy a light breakfast after the count.
 
Harris Lake County Park invites the whole family to join them Wednesday afternoon for Owls Up Close. You will practice owl calls, read a story and make an owl craft.
 
Wake County is offering some really great camps for home schoolers and kids who are tracked out. Held this month at Historic Yates Mill County Park, the three day camps offer the flexibility of signing up for one, two or all three days. Amazing Animals is coming up January 15th-17th and Digging Up Our Past will be held January 29th-31st.

Lots of Fun Indoors
 
Brave will be the featured flick at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.

 

Science Saturdays are back this weekend at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Join Arthur Bogan, Research Curator of Aquatic Invertebrates for a lecture on Freshwater Mussels and Snails: Why They Are Important to You.
 
The Wonderland Express is still chugging along at the Museum of Life and Science through January 6th. Make sure to click through for the coupon so your Kids Visit Free with an adult admission through January 4th.
 
Photographer José Galvez will be at the North Carolina Museum of History Sunday afternoon for a presentation of his exhibit, Picturing Our People, a collection of works focusing on the everyday life of Latinos in North Carolina.

Robots & More at the Fairgrounds
 
The Robotics Regional Tournament in March will feature competition between 45 teams from across the country and Brazil. Come on over to the Dorton Areana for the Robotics Kickoff Event this Saturday to see how the competition is shaping up.
