 Happy Labor Day Weekend! It looks as if we will be Hurricane free and the holiday weekend will be spectacular! 

Thursday Kicks off the Holiday Weekend

 

Join a park Ranger Thursday morning at William B. Umstead State Park to make a Hiking Stick and then go for a short hike on one of the park's trails. Thursday afternoon, come to the park for a Turtle Trek. Try your hand a Beginning Fly Casting at Umstead Friday morning.
 
After dark Thursday night, you can Meet Your Friendly Neighborhood Creatures of the Night at Eno River State Park.
 
They will be kicking up their heels Thursday night at the Halle Cultural Arts Center for a Family Dance. There will be a traditional Dance Caller teaching fun dances for the whole family and a live, old-time string band.
 
Friday is Family Movie Night at the Burwell School Historic Site. Join them on the front lawn to enjoy punch and popcorn as you watch the feature film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art invites you to explore Winter in August and then stay to enjoy the 2011 movie The Artist Friday night.
 
The American Tobacco Campus Amphitheatre will present a concert by Charanga Carolina, the only university based charanga ensemble in the state of North Carolina Friday evening.
 
Head on over to Downtown Historic Hillsborough for Last Fridays. This month's celebration will feature a concert by Big Ron Hunter & Band and a celebration of the Last Fridays Bake-off Season in addition to the artists, food vendors, musicians and craftspeople set up around the courthouse.
 
Crowder District Park welcomes families after dark Friday for a Firefly Frenzy. They will catch and release lightning bugs and then you'll get to create your own unique lighting pattern to "talk" with your fellow bugs. 
 
Festivals & Fun
 
City Plaza in Downtown Raleigh will be hosting the annual African American Cultural Festival both Saturday and Sunday. The Festival will feature an African American arts and crafts market, non-stop live entertainment, specialty items and food vendors. There will even be a family-friendly Village featuring performances and educational, interactive programming for school-aged children.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences invites you to join them for Science Saturday. This week's lecture will explore The Invisible World - A Microbiological Perspective on Life.
 
Get outside and enjoy Raleigh's warm summer evenings at the Sunday in the Park Concert Series at Fred Fletcher Park. This weekend's concert will feature the kid favorite, Sandbox.  
 
More Weekend Fun at the Parks
 

Join the Lake Crabtree County Park bird enthusiast, Vernon, for an easy walk while looking and listening for our feathered friends. Discover different types of birds and their habitats.

Historic Yates Mill Park will offer a variety of fun opportunities to dive into our local history this weekend. Saturday morning, you can Paddle the Pond and explore the pond's many features as seen only from the water. Both Saturday and Sunday, you are invited to take a Mill Heritage & Local History Tour and explore the inner workings of the fully restored mill. On Monday, they are offering a Special Mill Tour focusing on Labor Saving Devices.

Fishing is a great way to spend time with your family. Learn basic fishing skills and enjoy some time together during Sunday's Fishing Basics at Bass Lake Park.

The Holly Springs Cultural Center will host Steve McElhaney, Bass Lake Naturalist on Tuesday night to discuss Creating Your Own Backyard Habitat.

Lots to do at the Fairgrounds

 

There is quite an eclectic mix again this weekend at the State Fairgrounds. Some of the events do have a small admission charge so make sure to click through for all the details.
 
The Hunt Horse Complex will be hosting the Labor of Love Horse Show on Saturday and Sunday. There will be all levels of dressage competition.
 
AKC registered dogs will compete each day for points leading to championships, as well as dog obedience trials for degrees and obedience championship points at the Kennel Club Dog Show.
 
Treasures of the Earth Gem, Mineral & Jewelry will bring together collections gold and sterling silver jewelry, loose gems, pearls, beads and findings, minerals, crystals, fossils all under one roof.
